'95 Corolla DX Wagon (5spd) Replacement trans help!

Hello,

I have a '95 Corolla DX Wagon with the 1.8L 7AFE and a standard transmission.

The transmission is bad, popping out of gears and fluid was full of metal when drained, eventually quit shifting all together.

I'm looking for a replacement standard transmission and I keep seeing them listed as being for either the 4AFE or 7AFE, the car has the 1.8L 7AFE but that seems to limit the amount of options I have greatly.

Can anyone tell me what the differences are? Could I put a 4AFE manual trans into a 7AFE car? If its just a gear ratio difference I would be fine with it but if it is a difference in bellhousings or mounting then I won't look for a 4AFE transmission.

Thank you guys for any help you can provide.

I searched and the only relevant hits were for automatic transmissions.

They use the same C52 transmission, same gear ratios and all as far as I know. You can get one from either a 1.6L or 1.8L 7th gen Corolla.
Both 4AFE and 7AFE transmissions will work for you. They mount exactly the same. I believe the 4a used the C50 and the 7a got the C52. I believe the only difference is beefier synchros in the C52. Gear ratios are the same.
