I hear the sound only on up and down movement (bumps, potholes, speedbumps), and not with turning. It is a metal on metal sound, and seems to decrease at faster speeds (although perhaps I just can't hear it when I'm moving faster). I inspected the rear sway bar bushings and what I believed to be the front bar, and didn't feel any cracking. Dogbone mount starting to crack, but not near enough to fail.

I know it could be many things, but any common problems with the 97 V6?

I would have your local mechanic or whoever you goto check it out ASAP. I had a similar problem with my 97 V6. It turned out to be a loose bearing from my transmission that pretty much destroyed my transmission, and I had to get it rebuilt which cost me an arm & a leg to fix, almost $2800 at kennedy transmission.
