Over the years I haven't had much luck (and a few near disasters) tring to get auto door panels off and then back on. The things sometimes remind me of a puzzle.

My 1999 Camry XLE front door speakers have gotten cracked and the sound system is getting difficult to listen to. I want to replace the speakers, but need to get to them. These, by the way, are the type with the larger speaker near the bottom of the door and the small tweeter up near the outside mirror.

Where can I find instructions or advice on getting into the door to access the speakers? Will I need any special tools other than standard or metric screwdrivers and hex wrenches?

Most of the local car stereo shops want about $300 to replace these speakers.

Thanks in advance?

Found this by using the
button.

It's a different year but same overall setup. Make sure to remove the tweeter housing from the a-pillar first. There are 3-4 screw's alon the bottom of the door panel. There will be an plastic anchor on the side of the door panel that will have to come out. You need to take off the door handle housing, Pull up the power window switch and disconnect the power window/lock connenctors. There will be acouple of screws in the armrest. Once you have all the screw out of the door and the tweeter housing removed. Pull back on the bottom of the door panel to realease the clips. Then roll the window down and pull up on the entire panel to remove from door.

Thanks Luc, I was just about to direct him over to my site.

I just did a replacement of both front and rear speakers in my '98 Camry, and the '99 is pretty much the same. Just go to the forum that Luc linked to, and you'll find the link to my How-To page... complete with lots and lots of pretty pictures. :)

First of all, thanks for all the help. With this info in hand I might actually be able to do it without destroying my doors. I also found a site at:

http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalToyCamry1FDrSpk.htm

that goes into quite a bit of detail as to how this is done on '97 to '01 Camrys. I don't have new speakers yet, but I poked around with the instructions on one of the doors and it looks pretty straightforward except for the little triangular piece at the edge of the window with the tweeter speaker in it. All of the instructions say to just pull it off, but I've pulled on it in various ways and keep getting nervous that I'm going to break something in there. It doesn't seem to want to just "pop off". Any suggestions about the safest way to do this?

I would prefer to just put the same type of speaker back in there. Any advice on where to order the factory original speaker?

Thanks in advance.

The A-pillar panel by the door can be taken off by prying it out. If you go around each 3 sides and pry, you can loosen it. Don't pop it out through one side only, as you may crack the clips.

You can call TAP and check if they have factory front speakers.
