My high beams do not work. The head lamps are good, fuses are OK, replaced the head lamp relay and multi function switch! Also replaced the Day light running light relay

When I pull the turn signal switch back the high beams flicker ON but I soon as I release the headlamps tun OFF. This is an indication the head lamps are OK.

If I push the switch forward the headlamps turn OFF :ugh3:

I do not know what else to check. please help

It's hard for me to imagine in a 99 but maybe the headlight switch is faulty. If you find the wire loom and plug you should be able to test it without removing it.

Might be the DIM Relay ....located in Relay Box no. 2 ... towards the front of the engine, just to your right as you open the hood.

If you can access the Body Electrical section of the Gen 4 Repair Manual, there are several helpful illustrations and diagrams that can be used to check out the Dimmer Switch and other associated components.

See if is the bulb, If you have one laying around put it on and see if it works on the high beam. I don't know if this is true... Some after market bulbs could break after using the high beam many times.

I took out the Dim relay and it wiggles inside (sounds like it is broken inside). How is this relay affect the high beams.

I bought the head light relay for $20 and did not fix the problem. would hate to spend another 20

Dim Relay is definitely worth a try...but why not go to a salvage yard, show them the part ...get one from them and see if it actually fixes the problem? The problem might also be something wrong with the dimmer switch on the steering column...or did you say that you had replaced it?
Did you buy the other relay from the dealer?

Went to a yunk yard. bought the Dim relay for $2 and FIXED the problem. Thank you

Hello folks,

Am new to this forum and my very first post. I recently purchased a 2000 Camry for my son and seem to have the same problem as the original poster. All fuses, relays and lights (including headlights and dimmer) seem to be working fine EXCEPT the high beam. I can't seem to figure out this problem after checking everything I could. Can any experienced knowledgeable person help me out here as to why the car's high beam wouldn't work when utilising the lever/switch in the cabin steering area? [Please note that when the lever right next to the steering (also used for turn signals) is pulled, the headlight comes on and when released shuts off but when pushed down at rest, nothing happens.] Much obliged.

I will check the headlight bulbs tomorrow morning to see if they are H2, H3 or H4 if that solves the problem and shall await others' responses (if they have any).

a 2000 camry has separate bulbs for high and low beam (9006 for low, 9005 for high) unlike the 97-99 which has one bulb for both high and low. that said, the wiring is probably the same. check the DIM relay as was suggested, if not that then suspect combination switch.

Would that make any difference or does one must have H2 (perhaps low beam side) and the other H4 (perhaps high beam side); something of that sort.

The dimmer lights on the dashboard work fine unless the DIM Relay has other functions I am not aware of that also controls headlights or low/high beams. But how about the lever/bar just beneath the steering wheel where you turn to switch the lights on/off and also used as turn signalling that may have a specific wire disconnected from inside which operates the high beam?

I have no idea about what and where lies a "combination switch". Would appreciate further input.

the bulbs and plugs are designed so that unless you break something or modify the plug/bulb, you cannot plug in the wrong kind of bulb into the wrong socket.

the dim relay has nothing to do with the dash lights. see OP's fix.

the combo switch is the very same arm/lever you mention. Because it controls both the turn signals and the headlights, it is thus called a combination switch.

I have the same problem with a 96 Camry. Not sure it has a DIM Relay or at least I can't find one. The HEAD Relay seams to be working fine and the high beam blue light on dash panel comes on when dimmer switch is pulled back towards the steering wheel but the High Beam lights do not work whether you push it forwards(standard high beam switch position) or pull it backwards. I have not got deep into the wiring yet other than physical condition looked fine but did replace the bulbs with no results. Can you tell me where the DIM Relay would be on this unit or would it have a different label than DIM? I really don't want to pull the steering wheel and get into the steering column if I don't need to.

DIM relay is in with the DRL #4 relay. Box is the one near the battery, DIM relay is on narrow side (I'm looking at Toyota's line drawing in service manual).
OOps, just noticed you've a '96. Manual if for '99. might be the same.
