99 v6 csi

When would it be absolutely necessary to replace front and/or rear shocks on my csi v6 1999. Considering it's got almost 200,000km with no apparent history of any shock maintenance/repair. Can a shock (driver side) produce a squeak/crunch noise when turning ?
