so when i rev the engine in neutral or with the clutch out the response time is very slow and lags behind the gas pedal enough that when i clutch and degas for an upshift the rpm's will rise before falling. also when downshifting i actually finish blipping the gas pedal before the rpm's even start to rise. is a delay like this normal for this generation corolla? i would have thought since the intake mani is right next to the throttle and the engine the response would hav ebeen faster ...

specific year???

Sounds like you have a M.A.F. (mass air flow sensor) problem. The easiest way to test it is to remove the sensor and check resistance.
Resistance Temperature
13.6 - 18.4 k
W -20 °C (-4°F)
2.2 - 2.7 k
W 20°C (68°F)
0.5 - 0.7 k
W 60°C (140°F)

If the resistance is not as specified, replace the MAF meter.
