My 1999 Camry ABS light came on. Not sure what that means but don't have a lot of money and wonder what the problem may be and any cheap fixes.
If you haven't cleared the codes yet, here's how to read them.

As others have said, wheel speed sensor problems are pretty common, and not hard to replace. The front wheel speed sensor cables are right there in the brake caliper area. So if someone got careless servicing the brakes, it's possible they damaged them.

But check the codes first and report back.

1998 Avalon ABS light after new struts

I had rear struts replaced yesterday and when they test drove it, the tech asked if my ABS light was on before it came in. Of course it wasn't, so they took the sensors off, inspected and cleaned them and it didn't go out. It looked like they let the rear axles fall free when they un-bolted the struts so I'm thinking they probably pulled the sensors and wiring when it fell. I checked resistance at the connector and both show an open. I'm looking for a way to test the system with out a scanner. The flash codes maybe?

Yes, that will work. But if you're seeing an open circuit across the sensor leads, odds are about 99.999% they're bad. And you're probably correct about how they got damaged. If they're not careful when they're pulling the struts out, and they push the rear suspension down too far, the cable gets broken.

I pulled the flash code which I read as "38" and looked it up. It showed it to be the right rear speed sensor circuit open. The shop ordered a new sensor, I put it in since they were really busy, then re-read the code. Still shows 38, but I also see a 39 (left rear sensor cirduit) I probably miss read it the first time and really had both circuits open to begin with. The new sensor shows 1700 ohms accross the leads, both the old sensors are open. Don't know if the shop will go for another $175 sensor, but it looks like they broke both sensor cables. Still need to clear the right side though.

Thanks,

Phil
