So topped off my ac with the can freon with the gauge yesterday. The ac compressor was kicking on and off and on other cars it means its low. Anyway, today driving home and compressor starts kicking on and off/blowing hot and then freon begins to shoot out the bottom of the engine bay. So i turn off the trunk. restart it and turn on the AC and its back good as new, no more kicking and blows colder than ever. Im wondering if i accidently over filled it and maybe it has a release that relieved it. like a BOV. I did fill it yesterday till it was on the just right/too much line. anyone know? Thanks.

I've never heard of a BOV on an A/C system before but I have had that happen on a Civic I owned a few years ago. Hooked the gauge up and just let some freon spray out until the pressure dropped because the system acted weird after filling it up. I have an '09 so I've never even thought of the A/C system yet so I don't know about our trucks.

Ralphva didn't need stupid ace comments. Anyway. Didn't know if newer cars had some relief valve that reduced pressures. Freon did come out. Still trying to see from where. Has to have some protection because it relieved enough so that now it works fine but not unload all the freon.

Yes, it has a pressure relief valve according to the factory service manual. I'll see if I can find where it's located.

EDIT:
Okay found it. It's in the back of the compressor. The picture is from the front, so it doesn't show exactly where in the back, only that it screws in back there and has an o-ring on it.

i was just talking to an ac guy 2 days ago concerning my wifes honda. he said some newer ac compressors have a way to relieve excess pressure if it builds up in the system. so maybe he wasnt blowin smoke up my butt???

Just want to let you know that cycling, (compressor kicking on and off) can also be caused by a restriction in the ac system. Adding freon in this case would only increase the high side pressure until the pressure relief valve opened up. It is possible that this is what happened, and when the pressure bled out, it possibly temporarily unblocked the restriction. If the cycling starts happening again, be sure to check the high side and the low side pressures in case there is indeed a restriction.
