I am looking to buy 6 cyl. 4x4. Want an 03 or 04, I am in South Florida so noone really has any use for 4 wheel drive down here (with stock tires anyway) except if you have a big boat that you can't get up a ramp. Is there anything I should check out when buying a 4x4 to make sure the system works?? Also I have never bought a Toyota, let alone a Tacoma so I am looking for anything in particular I should pay close attention to. I am moving to Tennesse in the next year so will be towing a, atv or 2 in the mountains.

nothing really specifically that you need to look for that you wouldn't on any other car. just put it in 4x4 and see if it engages. they're great trucks. don't know what mileage you're looking to get but if you're at, near or after 90k, check for timing belt stickers on the timing cover, stuff like that-maintenance records are nice too-if you maintain a toyota it will last forever.

I did find one. It is an automatic (I am too tall to fit in a manual, not enough leg room for me). It's an 03, 4x4 6cyl. towing pkg., TRD, SR5 with 78,500 miles on it. I was a little concerned about the miles on it, but from what I am hearing from you guys that isn't too bad.

on the bottom left of the instrument cluster is a light that will light up when the 4wd is engaged. full green and you're good to go...blinking = not good.
