Ae86 Advice

Hello all,

I am new to the forum. I have a 90 rolla gts. I have finally found an affordable 87 rolla gts. it has 173000 k, near mint interior, drives strong. Rust on back quarters. I was hoping to get some pointers on what to look for in terms of mechanical problems.

Any help would be appreiciated.

I am not the most mechanically inclined person, but wont a swap between the two be somewhat difficult since one is FWD and the other RWD.

no

to swap a FWD 4ag to a RWD 4ag it doesn't take alot of effort, the blocks are basically the same, you just have to move the mounts, waterpump, cooling ancillaries, brackets and pulleys from one engine to the other, then buy an adapter or modify the intake manifold, and install a pilot bearing and your good to go. oh yeah, and swap in the RWD flywheel and clutch. It adds a few hours at most to the swap.

Not really it's almost the same block so it should in theory bolt up just fine. But you will need the ECU and wiring harness as well I belive.

All sounds good in theroy, but to tell you the truth I don't have the time nor the extra funds. Sort of off topic - but i have just recently seen commericals advertising the new corolla xrs( not the matrix), but on american stations so i don't know if its avaiable in canada. Has anybody heard if toyota will offer the corrola xrs in hatchback form. I heard the XRS produces 170 hp.
Either way - if there availble in canda, i probably start saving my funds for that.

Thanks for all the feedback guys - its really appreicated.

Since it's a 20 yr old car I recommend that you replace the common parts that break down:
-Fuel pump
-Water pump
-Alternator
-Headgasket (check compression 1st b4 you decide to do that)
-Spark plugs (RECOMMENDED Denso Iridium)

Good choice on the AE86! It's a fun car to drive, even if it's not the fastest!

First thing I would do is to get a copy of the official Toyota Shop Manuals for your GTS. Even if you're not mechanicalliy inlined, you will be at least aware of how each part must be fixed etc, and when the mechanics tell you that it's not worth fixing, and you're stuck with fixing the problem yourself, you at least have the books to help you along the way to doing the repairs. ;)

Good Luck!
