Mechanic said I need new front brake pads and rotor, but I don't hear anything from braking, and I don't feel braking is not performing.

My 4Runner SR5 is 1998, about 240k miles.

I just don't know if this is needed, or unnecessary repair. I didn't see him removing the tires, how did he know the rotor is bad? I know pads can be checked by eyeballing.

He gave me a price of $290. It's in NJ.

Some mechanics suggest replacing the rotors every time you change the pads. So if the pads needed replacement, that's why he may have recommended the rotors too. I don't think it's a bad idea to replace the rotors, but not sure if it's necessary. When were they last changed?

$290 sounds about right to get this done at a mechanic. You could shop around and ask other independent garages if they'll do it cheaper.

At 40,000 miles, it's possible that you won't need new rotors. But I think it's likely that you will, so you may as well change them if you're paying for labor. If you don't change them and the rotors warp in 10K miles, you'll be paying all that labor again.
