I installed a Sony (510) afermarket receiver in my 02 Taco and it sits at a slight angle to the dash (the right side sticks out a little more). Any ideas why? Could it be the antenna lead at the back right is hogging the space in there? Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks,
Mark0

Does the plug at the end of the truck's antenna lead plug straight into the back of the head unit, or is there a 90 degree elbow on the plug? How about the wad of wires connecting it to the factory harness? Are they in the road?

I have not had a similar issue with my Tacoma, but I did have to get a 90 degree antenna adapter for another vehicle installation to get it to fit all the way into the dash. Got it from Radio Crack, I think.

It sounds like you definitely have an obstruction, though.

Good luck!

My son had the same problem with a stereo he was given. It was simply too long to fit in the dash.
You may try looking on www.crutchfield.com for your stereo, and see if it's the correct size for your pickup.

Thanks guys. I bought it from Crutchfield and it's *supposed* to fit.... I'm not a fan of the frame for the HU anyway as I had to really jerry rig the frame to mount it to the factory brackets (had to drill holes in the frame, bolt it with bolts and then grind down the nuts to get the HU to slide in). It was a major PITA. I'm definitely going to buy a 90* adapter from the Shack when I've the time to fight with it again.

It definitely doesn't fit right -- the vent trim was tough to get back in place and the knobs didn't want to pop back on securely. It's one of those "it'll do for the time being" kind of things that's 7 months old already.

Mostly I'm getting my 'game plan ducks' in a row for when I'm up to the challenge again.

Thanks again,
Mark0

If it fit right, it would have had the right holes and everything would be fine. Sounds like Crutchfield messed up, unless there's more than one way to mount that unit. The Sony I bought (GT-500 I think - about $139) came with some funny slide-on frame that made the unit just a tad bigger. I guess the frame is necessary on other makes, but on the Toyota you have to remove that frame. The special release tool came in the box, so at least Sony made it reasonably painless. The bare radio unit then lined up with the factory brackets perfectly, and the rest was easy.

Sounds like it might be the same head unit that I have (CDXGT510). Yeah the frame was a stamping folded into a square so the holes on one side were inverted on the other side. I don't really care if the HU quick releases or not.

So how did you mount the brackets directly to the head unit? I don't remember there being mounting holes in the side of the HU....

Well the PDF is totally useless. You'd think you'd have a photo (or at least a detailed line drawing) of all sides of the dang thing.

So.... Are there standardized mounting holes in aftermarket head units? Does the HU have holes in it or just the tabs that lock it to the POS frame? I can't remember now but am surprised a lightbulb didn't light if I saw mounting holes in the side of the HU where the brackets are supposed to live while I was wrestling with how to make the dang thing fit...

I found the manual. I have a CDX-GT300.
The installtion instructions can be found here:
http://129.33.22.12/release/CDXGT300_Installation_Guide.pdf

Without the sleeve and without the faceplate trim, everything went together very easily. I didn't take any pics while I was installing it.
Thanks. That's pretty much the same installation PDF that I have.

So (forgive my ignorance please) there are bolt holes in the side of the HU to attach the brackets to?

In the PDF the section for Toyota's shows a frame and 'cubby' that my truck doesn't have (the old radio bolted right to the mounting brackets). Did yours? Also I didn't see (not that *that* means anything) where it said to discard the frame for Toys...

TIA

Yes, there were holes for the screws for the factory brackets as shown in the diagram. You're right... nothing in the directions says to discard the sleeve/bracket thing that came with the radio. But I did, and that worked out great. I guess it sort of clicked right away that the sleeve would make the installation miserable. I think that without the sleeve, the radio looked like the Toyota picture.

My factory radio was a double-DIN height, but Crutchfield included a small single-DIN pocket with the order, making the Sony radio (also single-DIN) + the pocket fit the vertical space exactly.

Looking at that Toyota picture for reference, I have the bare radio unit in the top half, and the pocket in the bottom half.

Thanks man. Sorry to be such a pest.

Sounds like we have pretty much the same setup (dbl DIN to single Sony with a cubby). Well I definitely have a game plan now. Muchas gracias.

BTW I have family all over Illinois and grew up in Chicagoland. Whereabouts in the state are you?
