It's always surprising just how SMART modern airbags are. I'm talking vehicles made in the last decade. Even substantial accidents don't have airbags go off when it's obvious they're not needed. Manufacturers seemed to have really nailed the tuning of the airbag systems so they're used only when truly necessary.
 
My 1997 wiring diagram manual doesn't show any relation between the seat belt and airbag circuit, so I'm stumped trying to explain why when the seat belt is buckled would affect the airbag warning. Maybe a slight variation in the voltage (buckled/unbuckled seat belt) is triggering the warning. They may share the same power source or ground point and there is a problem there.
