I'm going to buy a Tundra soon. It will be an Access Cab with a V8. Other
than A/C, options don't matter too much to me. It will get fairly regular
use hauling gravel, firewood, building materials, etc. I'm hoping to get a
limited-slip rear end but that can always be added later. As I understand
it, the factory locker defaults to an open differential when not locked, so
I think I'd rather have the limited-slip since hardcore wheeling is not in
the cards for this vehicle.

I'm hoping to find a nice one with 20-30k miles on it for a reasonable
(under $20k) price.

Anything I should be aware of? Any years to stay away from? Any paint
problems?

I have a 2000 SR5 V8 Access Cab. If I had the opportunity, I'd go with the
double cab. The access cab is hard to access in parking lots where cars
are parked on either side of you. My truck has a transmission problem but
I've owned Toyotas for over 30 years and this is the first time I've had a
problem with one.

No lockers for Tundras, and factory LSD became available as an
option in 2002. Do not assume the TRD model has LSD.

A better transmission was used in 2002 or 2003 (requires T-IV ATF,
not Dexron-III), and better yet in 2005. The front brakes were
improved in mid-2003, but many earlier trucks had the brakes updated
via TSB.

Thanks Ken!

I got a wild hair up my booty and bought a new '06... gulp... been having
little mini panic attacks about it for the last few days since I bought it!
First new vehicle I've ever bought.

It was mainly because everyone wanted so much for the used ones that it
showed me two things. First, I wasn't going to save much buying used,
especially with the $2k cashback they have going right now, and second I
wasn't going to lose much if I needed to get out of it in a year or two.
