Talked to a man this morning. he has a 97 Camry. He said the engine light came on. Ran the code and said O2 sensor. He said hwas bad and decided to stop it. He took out the area of the speedometer and some way stopped the light from ever coming on again. I don't know if there was a bulb, wire or want but he said he found a way so the light does not work. I said that light was put there for a reason and he should just have the sensor fixed. He told me he had been driving and working on car 50 years and he could tell and hear when one of his cars was not running right he didn't need some stupid light coming on and telling him what to do. Just didn't know you could deactivate that light he said remove two screws then the 4 holding the main part with the speedometer and you have access to het rid of it. What do you think?

Well I talked to his son about it and sure enough he said the light is out. he said he drove the car on a trip and the car ran fine. He said they replaced the o2 sensors (by a dealer) I think he said this car had 3 and it ran fine. The compter was reset and and the light went out for one day came back on took back to the dealer and same reading. dealer said it was a short in the wiring and this was normal on camry's and for 800.00 they would fix it. He said dad fixed it in 20 minutes N/C

It's just a bulb he took out (yeah, take the plastic piece off, take the screws out, pull out the instrument panel, find the right bulb, twist, pull, and it's gone).. really stupid of him to do but, yeah, that dude's got way too much pride.

Wouldn't get away with it in NC. The annual inspection is run through the OBD port and any codes will cause you to fail inspection and thus no new registration until it is fixed.
