Anyone Upgrade Their Front Tow Hooks?

15274 Views 23 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  TACOSALAD
Did a bit of searching here and ttora and couldn't really find any pics or write ups of after market tow hooks installed on the fronts of newer tacomas.
I want to see if someone has found a good spot to put them, I just bought one to do the passenger side of my truck and not 100% on where I want it, plus my truck only came with the driver side loop and it looks a little flimsy so I figured I should upgrade.
By the way how strong is that loop-recovery point, anybody break one yet ?

Driver-side loop is used during shipping for tying down, and it IS not be used as a recovery point. I remember reading a discussion about it on Ttora almost a year ago or so....
Well thats good to know, sooo where does one hook up tow strap to tow out other people?
i put a hook on the passenger side and it fit very nicely but the first time i got tugged out by it, well its pretty much bent all to hell towards the driver side now as you can see in the pic.

TRD OR has a front recovery point on the passenger side.
I upgraded mine to 2 very well mounted shackles, it was a bit expensive though :D

I bought the TRD offroad one for my Sport.

I use it all the time to pull jeeps out when we go offroading. ;)
I love that bumper Tacosalad, who makes them?

ALL PRO makes them. It's their new plate bumper.

Keep in mind that you want to avoid pulling people out in reverse. I can't remember exactly, but I think the reverse gear is weak and you can run into potential tranny issues from this. There is alot of info on TTORA regarding this subject.

Well, you can do what I did and buy one used from a member for $30 OR you can buy one new from the dealership for about $100.

Here's something Allpro wrote on TTORA:
"We didn't realize people would want shackle mounts on these front bumpers since they allow you to retain the factory recover point and since they allow for a winch to be mounted as a means of recovery. You certainly don't want to pull anyone from the front since pulling in reverse could cause damage your ring and pinion gears."

Here's the link to the thread: http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=87793&highlight=reverse

The thread is discussing the lack of shackle mount on their old style bumper
