I have a fifth gen Celica ST. The engine still runs but it has quite a lot of miles and may need to be replaced eventually. Easiest thing would probably be to get another 4AFE, but part of me also wants more power and I could learn a lot and have a lot of fun swapping in a different engine. From what I've seen on this forum, it looks like the 3SGE should be a good choice because only one motor mount would need to be custom. However I still have a couple of questions:

Would a BEAMS from an Altezza fit, or would I need to get one of the older gen engines? Also as an alternative would a 3SGTE fit?
Do all of gens have the same transmission bolt pattern? If not, what transmission choices would I have?

I haven't bought anything yet and won't until I have a better idea of if I can even do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 4A-FE engine has an "A" block, which associated transmissions bolt up to. The 3S-GE / 3S-GTE engines have an "S" block, which associated transmissions bolt up to. Transmissions for an "A" block engine will not bolt up to an "S" block engine. Your AT180 was made for an "A" block powertrain. the ST184 / ST185 were made for the "S" block engine. The first letter of the frame type ties to the type of block engine used in that frame. Just so you understand that.

You would be better off if you opted for a 4A-GE or 4A-GTE engine instead. Look them up - that family of engines was very popular, mostly though in Japan & Europe.

The BEAMS 3SGE from the Altezza (Gen5 blacktop) is a RWD/longitudinal engine and is significantly different from the rest of the transverse 3SGEs. A redtop BEAMS from an ST202/MR2 (JDM) is the best 3SGE version that "bolts in" (with the appropriate mounts, wiring, exhaust etc).
