I am the new owner of TAL (4 days) and was wondering how to optimize the sound system. Sound is great while driving in town but when I get on the interstate I have to crank up the volume and it sounds distorted. Any suggestions on the best setting for the ASL and has anyone else experienced this problem? I have seen where some owners recommend turning off surround sound and ASL. Any feedback appreciated.

have adjusted the ASL many times and never seemed to notice much difference. Probably subtle or I'm really old.
I also have noted that the ASL seems to have no effect whatsoever. Even the old and hearing-impaired (raising my right hand) should be able to detect a change in volume, and I hear none.

Had a Nissan long ago that had this feature and it was very noticeable.
I am guessing that long ago the cars were much more "noisy" on highway speeds and when they slowed to residential levels there was a difference.

My Avalon is quiet in town and pretty quiet on the road. This may be the nominal difference.

Haven't tried it yet in my 2017, but definitely noticed it in my prior 2012 Camry. Would be really weird if they lost a functional feature, probably due to a software glitch
My 2012 Camry XLE does not seem to do much. I think this lends credibility to the old ear theory.

I don't have proof, but I think they've refined this feature to make it seamless and less noticeable. I used to always turn ASL off because, even on low, the volume jump was too significant and annoying...from my '09 Scion xB, and the wife's '10 RAV4 and '13 Sienna.

My '17 Camry, on the other hand, is much better. I leave it on low, and I don't notice the volume jump...that's how it should be. I know it's there, though, since I don't have to constantly turn the volume up and down when going from red lights to interstate speeds.

I still think it's the delta (change) of noise that needs to be noticed and it's not significant in my car, with the windows up.

If it matters, you might check with windows down vs up.

It's not an important feature because I drive with the windows up mostly.

On both 07 TCH and 12 HiHy, ASL significantly improve sound quality. Also, you can not adjust ASL. You can turn it on or off.
That's to OP's question:

Any suggestions on the best setting for the ASL

I would likely not use any sound modification. It takes some money and processing to positively affect sound. For example that is why people spend thousands on pre-amplifiers when a nice dsp and amp combo does well for pure sound reproduction.
