Every 2-3 weeks my 2014 Avalon hybrid won't start. I wait a half hour up to four hours and it always starts. The dealer can't diagnose it because it won't fail for him. He had it a week once and it didn't fail. It gives me a key icon. I've replaced the battery in my key fob. I've replaced the starting battery in the car. The dealer said it might me my aftermarket remote start so I had that removed. Still it gives me a problem. This problem has persisted since last November. This past Sunday I came out of church and it wouldn't start. Usually I can fiddle with it for about a half hour and it starts. This time it didn't. We went out to breakfast and went back to it and it still wouldn't start. This was at noon. I came back to it at 4:00 pm and it started.

Are you in a salt state? Did the dealer check the health of the battery cables? They can corrode from the inside out. Are all the connections on the starter circuit tight and clear of corrosion? If the dealer cannot solve, you need to hunt around for a shop that specializes in automotive electrical systems.

Hybrid does not have starting battery. If you were referring to 12V one.
Key logo showing indicates you have security system issue. Key is not recognized.
Maybe do key re learn procedure or, as you frequent dealer, ask them to re set keys with ECU.

Putting your location/region in your signature helps us.

My 2014 key icon lights up every time I get in to start the car. I think it's showing that it recognizes the key and that it's in range.

How many miles on the car? Are you the original owner? How old is the 12V battery (in the trunk)? I know it doesn't start the car, but the electronics depend on it, right?

If it's the original, I would replace it. I'm at 108k miles, original battery, and I figure I'll be replacing it before too long.

Car has 120,000 miles on it. Not original owner. Had the car two years before this problem cropped up. The 12 v battery has just been replaced. That was the initial so-called fix.

Michigan. Starts 95% of the time. It's the 5% that has me in a quandary.

What does that mean "Putting you location/region in your signature"?

Who replaced the battery? When was it replaced? Is it Toyota OEM? In my experience on various auto forums, QC for 12V batteries is very spotty.

We all know the 12V battery doesn't start the car, so there isn't great "load" placed on the battery at start-up. However, if your battery is weak, and suffers voltage drop, the electronics won't function properly. In my experience, erratic electrical gremlins are 12V battery issues.

If the replacement was done in November, and you've had problems since, you should still be able to have the installer solve the problem.

Perhaps you could describe what you fiddle with to make it start? Will the key fob reliably lock/unlock doors/trunk when the car won't start? What happens if you hold the key fob right next to the start button when you push it?
Here is a link to a thread different than yours:
I believe that I read on one of the Hybrid threads a similar problem (to what you stated), and the solution was to replace the start button....in the vein of thought that the car is not recognizing the key signal to immobilizer? Please investigate this further and check with the dealer before spending money on what I said.

According to the following thread, the smart key door function and the immobilizer are two different functions, meaning if one works, it does not mean the other does. I realize that it is a different system, but general function is the same.

You got that right.., Any easy fix, is always a good thing.
Since I had no confidence in the vehicle, I decided to drive it once a day to the dealers, shut it off and try to start it again. I did that Monday and Tuesday. Then on Wednesday at the dealer it didn’t start. The diagnosed the problem as a power steering circuit break. It’s being fixed now

Brilliant idea to drive it to the dealer. I will keep it in mind if I ever have an intermittent problem. Glad for you that the problem is being corrected. Thanks for posting the resolution.

Can you share details like what they changed (part number) and how much was it (since out of warranty) and any other details. Out of warranty, dealer loves to work on the car (any manufacturer, it is the same). Within warranty, all issues are non - reproducible / it is acceptable / by design :( . This was my experience with local dealers.

P/S pump electrical connection / failure, the ECU prevent it from starting? Wonder why it didn't threw a code
