So Ive been make frequent trips from Houston to New Orleans in the new tacoma (DC, 4x2). According to Mapquest that is about 355 miles. I am averaging about 17mpg going at an avg of 80. I make sure to take it easy on the acceleration and no a/c running nor windows down. Tailgate is up. Trying to max out on gas mileage while keeping a time schedule. Yes I know 80mph is not a mpg friendly speed. Question is if this is a good MPG or does my truck guzzle more gas than others? I only have 3000miles (4-5 trips back a forth from Houston to NOLA) on the truck and had it only for a month. According to the toyota site we are suppose to get 19/22. Maybe the truck needs to break in a little more to get closer to the stated MPG. I would be happy with 20mpg @80mph highway and 17mpg city.

for better gas mileage, you'll need to slow it down. i bet you'd be surprised how much better mileage you get at 65-70 mph compared to what you get now. leave earlier if the time schedule demands it, or just accept the gas mileage. tires can have a big impact as well. when you replace your tires, do some indepth searching for lighter tires.

I believe that mine gets around 18 or so at 80mph.... I'd bet you were going more like 85....am I right? I'll get around 21 pretty consistently at 65-70mph and I'm more than happy with that...and I have a DC Prerunner with 265/75's

I have an 05 DC 4x4 auto with a cab height cap and I commute 18 miles each way with 1/2 being highway and driving that part @ 70 I get 20mpg. If I take it up to 75-80 and get on it more around town I'll drop it down to 18.

I just drove 200 highway miles pulling an enclosed 2 place snowmobile trailer and got 12 miles per gallon. I was hoping it would do better, but my trailer is a big box. 101 inches wide and 12 feet long. Not heavy, but aerodynamically challenged. ZR

ok i guess I have the average. I know if I slow down to 65-70mph mpg will increase considerably, but being on the road for ~5hours is long enough. going ~65mph will make it ~6hrs. At 80mph I make one leg with just one tank of gas.

Crank up the tire pressure to about 40 pounds and keep the tailgate up and see if that increases the mileage. Slow it down to 65-70 and don't use the cruise control if you are riding through hills in that it causes the truck to downshift too much and seems to use more gas in doing so.

I've also been doing miles on the superslab and at an average of 90 mph I get 15 - 15.3
At 80 mph it does 17.4 - 18.1 and when I slow down to the speed limit (70mph) I do get a
consistant 19.5 - 20mpg. City autocross driving is much worse than I expected. Not really
any improvement over my stock V-8s. I am about to change wheels and tires so I will see if
that has any effect.

cool keep us posted silentawareness. Also pls let us know what tires and rims. I have a feeling a quick debadging of the decals and the dealer stickers will increase my mpg back to the stated mpg. Especially the "Toyota MotorSport" sticker! lol. They cause too much drag! :)

Thanks for everyone's input!

I just filled up on my way to work and my SG said that I got 14.9 MPG. All of that is city driving. Note that I don't drive like a Sunday driver either. I still find it rather amusing that from a dead stop I can spin both rear tires! Will be taking a 2 hour trip each way to the in-laws tomorrow. Going to air up the tires to 40psi and see what I get. Will post my results.

There are gas mileage threads GALORE here. Do a search for it, and you could probably read for three hours.
X10

No matter what you do or say people will post up these threads asking "what mpg do you get "
