Hi All,

I'm planning on towing a car sometime this summer and would like to be on the safe side by adding a trans cooler. I already have the tow package (green fan clutch, factory hitch/ harness), but my truck doesn't have an air-flow style cooler, only the radiator tube style.

I was curious as to which aftermarket brand transmission fluid cooler seems to be the most preferred, or who has had issues with any particular one. Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

Any of the aftermarket ones should be fine. Hayden comes to mind.
When you connect it, eliminate the radiator section. When they go bad, you can end up with trans fluid in your engine and coolant in you trans :(

Ok, ya I see that Hayden is a popular choice. I never thought about bypassing the cooler on the radiator for the sake of preventativing issues down the line... I suppose that happens if the wall/lining between the cooler and radiator core break, causing the mixture of fluids? Good heads up!

From what I have seen and been told is that they supply a long bolt that goes through the brackets on the new cooler and goest through your radiator fins and bolts on that way. When I do mine, I am putting mine in a remote location such as the upper door jam under the body this way I still get cool air but I will not have to worry about damaging it or blocking my radiator. Here is a 4runner which is similar to your trucks front end.

Yes, I noticed the kit comes with these long zip tie-like things that clamp the cooler to the ac condensor, but I didn't know if the cooler could actually bolt directly to the radiator support or other bracketry. As far as your mounting idea, would it have suffiecient air flow through it if it was under your car? Sounds unique though.

They sell a cooler with an electric fan attached so this will be the one that I order. I will be getting some time off in the next month or two and when I do I will be ordering it and building the brackets. I will take pics and send them to you so you can see how I mounted it. I figure I do a lot of off roading due to my job and this would be the safest place to install it.

So I just installed a small trans cooler on my chevy Belair today from Hayden. I picked it up at J&R speed shop for $35. I dont remember the model # since I threw away the box but this is how I am going to install it on my truck. Here is a picture of it partially installed on my car. I hope this helps. I just did this today.
