Best Box for L7: Subzone, sealed or vented?

2448 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  eddiem67
I have two 10 inch L7-2 Ohm DVC (600 rms each) with a Rockford Power 1001bd (1000x1 @ 2 ohms).

I want the best bass for my set up, so the question is: sealed or vented???

What are you looking for SPL or SQ?
I hope he's going for SPL because L7 is not the sub of choice for SQ people.
The L7 can also be a monster SPL sub. They go either way, but most people use them for SPL since there are better SQ subs out there for around the same price.
Port these bad boys, SQ? buy different subs, these are not SQ subs at all.
Sorry I didnt mention this the first time, its for SPL of course.
The L7 can be made into a great SQ sub with the proper install. But it's much easier to get an SPL response from them. Call Kicker tech support with the amount of power you'll be sending them and they'll give you enclosure designs or go to your local authorized shop and see what they recommend. There are some online calculators, but I don't trust them.

Obviously if you want SPL go ported. The size/tuning of your sub depends on what you're looking for and the amount of power you'll be sending it.
My vote: slot-ported box in a 6 cu. ft. box, built inside the trunk... ;) Check Kicker's website for more details.
kicker's disignes are for peopel that know nothing, a good shop will make you a nice custom box that iwll booom. since i have 1 12" you have the same amount of driving force as me roughly, and my box is only 3.75 Cubic feet and it pounds out so well. so yes go ported, you might not have that crisp bass, but they wil hear you a few blocks away.
It depends on what you want. FYI Anyone claiming the Solobarics have bad SQ is a newbie to car audio. Even a bad speaker in a great box can have awsome SQ. 85% of SQ is made, or lost in the installation. If you build a good box, they will be great.

Due to space issues I previously had 2 10" L5's in the smallest sealed box reccomended. .66qt that I custom built. I traded those in for two brand new 2004 10" L7's in the same box. They sound great and get quite loud.

You really should go to the Sounddomain.com audio forums under the Kicker section and ask for box reccomendations from either Ghost or Polecat HERE

Solo's are better at SPL than SQ, but don't listen to anyone that claims they sound bad, or can not build a box correctly.
btw SPAM, any box he puts those in is going to be louder than your one 12" sub. Unless you've got something like the 12" SoloX, you're not getting close.

I really don't want to start a flame war hear, but unless you want to put up some actual sound meter tested numbers, i'll trust my 20 trophies for SPL competitions over your word anyday.

Go ported. But remember, your port length is the biggest key in working with them. Box tuning is very important to spl in a ported box. I always use slot-ports when doing my jobs. After competing in the DB Drag events with 2 Kicker L7'2 and a earthquake D2 "shedder" pushing them, in the street 1-2 class. I was hitting 150db in average at the meter. Your L7 will kick butt if again, your box is tuned right. Good luck on your project.

P.S. Buying a ported box from a shop premade will not be in specs for your sub, even if they say it is. Its better to get one made by someone you can trust, that will get the best job done and serious pressure from those subs.
