hi. i recently bought a 88 4wd xtra cab 5 speed truck with 219k miles on it. its a real dog and gets horrible mileage. fifth gear is just about useless. it has 255-70-15 tires. i do like it though and am considering a newer engine with 120k miles on it. i wonder how much my mileage will improve with the new engine. i know it has to get better. i currently get about 10-12 city mpg. its a little low if you ask me. what do the rest of you get?

Is the muffler collapsed?
The stock muffler on my 84 4x2 was collapsed and I was getting about 8 mpg till I replaced it.

If you're getting poor gas millage, then a new motor isn't going to solve your problem.

Do the basics: Plugs (NGK or Denso only), dist cap, rotor, and wires.

Replace any vacuum lines that look questionable. It would be best to just replace them all.

Replace the O2 sensor if it looks old and you have no idea when or if it was ever replaced. You can get a Denso one for cheap from sparkplugs.com

Adjust the valves. It makes a difference in power and gas millage.

Pull codes from the computer.
