So, the car has a check engine light on and it keeps giving me the code 71. This is supposed to mean "EGR temperature signal too low".

But it appears that my car is not EGR equipped! It's a 95 1.6liter and I can not locate any egr components (please see pics below).

What could cause this code??? Could I be dealing with some kind of bypass?? Can someone tell from the pics if things look normal???

Things definitely look suspicious, like someone tried to remove the EGR. There should be two hoses on the top of the throttle body instead of one that loops around, and the VSV is mounted unusually. I don't have any pictures of what you're missing, but this thread has some information on the parts.

Yea that little loop looks wierd right.

So, what's the deal if it has just been removed? Is that good or bad?

I just calculated the fuel mileage from my first fillup and it was 23.5 mpg mixed... not very impressive. Don't know if that could be related... Hopefully I get better mpg in the future.

So, where would the EGR temperature sensor normally be located?

Good or bad? Hard to say, it helps emissions, but there's also a lot of carbon buildup in the intake because of it. There's normally a big metal valve on the back of the intake manifold, approximately under the throttle body, that the temperature sensor screws into. It's a little hard to get back there to look at everything, but depending on what was done , there might just be a block off plate where the valve would normally sit. There's a gray plug for the sensor itself, which should be somewhere close to that area.

MPG is a little low, I usually get 31 mixed, but a 1.6 auto will be a little lower than that. The ECM might just be freaking out on you because the check engine light is on. Another option I would consider is to find an ECM from a non-EGR 1.6 and swap it with your EGR ECM, which would solve the problem without having to reconstruct the EGR system.

More info. There's another "loop" in the system. It's visible in the second of my pics above. It's off of that rusty part on the back of the mani.

Also, i found a sticker on the inside of the hood called "Vacuum hose routing diagram". And it depicts the EGR valve, Modulator, switching valve and other parts that I don't have :headbang:, So my engine has been stripped of it's egr system, and instead equipped with various loops.

I saw a diagram in my Haynes of how the earlier models are supposed to look. Like mine exept they don't have those extra "loops" basicly.

Why was this done? If it's all about living with a CEL then I can suck it up, but I feel like this is troublesome...

Don't sweat it unless you have to have it for emissions inspection in your area, or you feel like you are polluting too much. Otherwise your car is better off without it. You can get all the parts at a junk yard or, new. The looped hose is by-passing the EGR vacuum modulator.

Thanks for the encouragement bud... Yea, I figured I'll just let it be that way. Passed inspection fine.

Just thinking I hope whoever did this knew what they were doing so that things are not in the wrong position, things that are supposed to be shut aren't opened and vice versa. There's a second loop of the Vacuum switching valve.

Other negative thing is I have to live with a constant CEL... anoying.
