Everyone is fine .. thanks.
it happened inside the car port witch really concealed in the smoke. Was kinda crazy. Was so black and thick. 20 - 30 minutes non stop buckets of water. So I breathed lots in. I’m sure that smoke was toxic lol. But maybe 4 feet in front of the car is the garage , and that had me panicking more than the car it’s self . Was do or die getting that fire under control. The amount of water / snow / 2 fire extinguishers and still was going. Had me tripping lol. - 40 barely dressed. Still can’t believe that all happened.

Thankfully it was only the car. You weren’t using a non GFCI outlet?

I’m pretty sure it is. I’m gonna have to take a look Thou….tomorrow. This was at my parents place. Or maybe they don’t want me to visit anymore eeeashhh. And I probably shouldn’t call it a garage. More of a shop. Tools / tanks / welding and all that goes on in there. If it would have been thru the night when sleeping. Yikes. Caught it fast!!

Apparently there’s a recall. I need to look into this further. One Firefighter told me I’m the 4th block heater incident in the past few weeks or something. And all were Toyotas. Then someone else told me there’s a recall. But I haven’t gotten any mail or calls. I googled it. It’s true. But I don’t have the block heater information on hand. Dealer would. Something to find out Monday?

This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships.
On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt.
Note: This recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers:
C014003034 PK5A408J09 PU14000904
C014003151 PK5A408J13 PU14000905
C014000885 PK5A489J11 PU14000907
C014000888 PK5A489J22 PU14000909
C014000907 PK5A410H00 PU14000911
C014100904 PU14000900 PU14000913
C014100907 PU14000901 PU14003571
C014100911 PU14000902 PK5A489J14
PK5A408J05 PU14000903
Safety Risk:
Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire.
Corrective Actions:
Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

Both your block heater and my block heater are certainly part of the list... Extreme cold spell ends tonight. I can remove mine to inspect, and see about upgrading the cord itself until the recall is taken care of.

-40 near the artic circle. I’m not too familiar with block heaters. Insurance should be able to decipher which is the failure point.

Oh. Just an fyi to anyone who may encounter this. Knock on wood it never happens to you. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Take a second from putting the fire out and unplug the extension cord from the wall. If you can. Learnt after the ordeal that by not doing so — i wouldn’t completely get the fire out . My situation was a lil diff thou. I probably would have gotten burnt.

I'm just 100 miles north west... Timmins test Toyota in the cold. We have GM cold weather development center.

If your Toyota starts at our Timmins testing facility, it will start in your driveway in winter. | Toyota Canada

Oh. I’m aware they test them In the cold. But maybe they don’t care about our feelings lol. Like. You’ll live if your car don’t warm up quick. Heat will come if your patient. And your clutch pedal feeling like a sponge won’t kill you. Regardless. I loved the car. !!! And with the hakapilitas or however you spell it Studs. Never get stuck.

My 2004 Corolla's block heater cord also deteriorated over time. The wiring rusts away, and I've had to splice a new length of cord with plug a few times on my 2019 Hatchback as well. The cord's insulation is weak too. Block heater's cord is however plugged into block heater and is replaceable.

Here's one listed for our Corolla... Part number is not on recall list.

Sorry to hear about what happened. Thank goodness it was just the car. Gives me a renewed sense of how important checking for deteriorated 110vac wiring to a block heater is 😐. Speaking of cold, and manual 'boxes... not really a great mix unless you take time to warm them up. It's actually hard on the box to shift gear when super cold. 2nd gear starts can ease matters a bit, I suppose. Shifts into 2nd are harsh feeling, often, til things heat up a bit.
