here is a photo of my longbed with thule's holding a 16 foot board. as you can see, there is a limited distance between the racks. thule's are inexpensive, but they don't hold a lot of weight. you can cut your own notches in the posts, for a custom height. i like 'em as low as possible. if needed it's easy to lift them or drop them. a 12 foot rowboat may be asking a lot from this style of rack. you won't have much distance between your posts. this 16 footer is secure as can be, but, it's 27 pounds, thin, and i have another foot between my posts. you may be fine. gets pretty windy here sometimes.

I made an L shaped extension for the hitch receiver that extended about 2 feet with a roller on top that lined up with rollers mounted on plywood in the bed kind of like a boat trailer.I will probably modify it to use 2 this spring to make it more stable.
Then slide the boat on transom first.

I put boats over my shortbox pretty regularly in the summertime - only kayaks and canoes though. I like the Thule rack quite a bit. I've put a lot of lumber on it over the past two years, and I don't have any concerns about its ability to hold weight. I've carried 400lb loads of oak up there a couple of times; it can work.

The kayak pictured below is 18'6".

^ nice looking kayak.

whenever someone asks me about my racks, i tell them the usual, then i point out the cheesy way the feet sit on the rails. i don't know what's under the plastic, and the foot only sits halfway on whatever 'it' is. nice to know you can load 400 on them. i have only had about 200 on there, and was worried about bending the bed rail.

This is my homemade kayak rack, ladder rack, boat rack, whatever you need to haul rack.
The best part about it is the fact that I did not have to modify my truck in any way. No holes drilled.......and the rack does not touch the top of the bed or any painted surface.

How did you attach the posts to the bed itself? do you have a pic of the posts mounted to the bed? thanks
