We just bought a 2016 Highlander with captains chairs but are having a terrible time with our child's booster seat. Booster seats generally have no reclining mechanism, but the back of it needs to be flush with the back of the seat it's installed in.

The problem we're having is the minimum locking recline for the captains chairs is too far back to safely secure the booster. The booster is nearly a 90 degree angle and the captains chairs apparently don't start to lock until somewhere around 110 degrees (i.e., even though obviously they can come forward to fold down for cargo, we cannot get them to lock in an upright-enough position). Result: either the back of the booster is inches away from the back of the seat, OR we push it against the back of the seat but then the base of the booster is angled off the seat.

Are we missing something? We've got to be...seems this would be a pretty big oversight in seats designed to accommodate boosters... :dunno:

So either your booster comes with a >90 degree recline or you adjusted the locking angle of the seat. If it's the latter, how'd you do it? If it's the former, there's not much recourse for me short of buying another booster. If you don't mind my asking what model of Recaro is that?

I'd say it's close to >90 degrees....the highlander seat isn't completely upright either (slightly leaned back in the normal position). I've got the bottom anchored with the latch straps and the top anchored over the top to the back of the seat. Hope this helps. I don't think we've adjusted the angle of the recline of the booster.

I figured it out...sort of. Turns out the booster is just a PITA.

So the carseat is an Evenflo, and we have a similar one in my other car. Out of curiosity I pulled that other one out and...it fit fine. Turns out the seat giving me a problem just has a shell with an absurdly upright angle. The one from my car had some lean to it.

So, the silver lining is this FYI to anyone who might be in the market for a booster...don't buy an Evenflo Chase. It occurred to me that this same phenomenon may have been responsible for some upholstery damage to our old SUV (due to digging the seat in tightly in an effort to level it off).

The other seat is an Evenflo Maestro. It's fine.

Just for reference, here's what I'm dealing with (no seat cover since I just tossed it in for the picture):

FWIW were using a seat cover PLUS a blanket to keep the food and junk off the heat perforated captains seats in the middle row. We have 3yr old and 18month old niece and nephew visiting from out of the country. So trying to keep the car clean on the inside is a challenge.
