Brake Fade Anyone?

Hello all. I have a 02 4WD Limited with 85K miles. Just changed the pads last year but still using stock rotors (front and rear) and using original stock pad on rear. Was driving this this afternoon on the 91 and traffic was building up so decided to slow down. From about 60 to 0 in what I would say 50-60 feet, the pedals felt all the way to the floor and brakes locked up the front wheels. I've almost hit the car in front of me until he noticed and moved forward alittle. I was wondering if this was brake fade or was there another problem with these brakes. Ever since I've felt that the stock brakes were not up to par in stopping this vehicle. Btw, the pads I've replaced are Raybestos Ceramic.

Should I consider slotted rotors or getting aftermarket blanks like Brembo. Was eyeing the ATE slotted at Tirerack and seems reasonable. Anyway, trying to get your input here. Thanks.

The Ceramic front pads on my '04 were fading when they were about into there backing. Replaced with semi-metalics from Autozone and flushed the brake fluid. WHAT a differince!!
ive actually opted out of the raybestos ceramics. though they say they are like oem, i noticed they were chewing thru rotors.

this current set is just the raybestos semi metallic ones, and so far, they have been on for almost a year, no issues, no brake fade, no warp rotors.
Great

So I guess the brake petal "feel" is a good indicator. Do you have steel wheels or alloys?? Do you notice more brake dust with the semi's??

Guess Semi-metalic after market is the recomended replacment for our trucks!:)

That is generally an indication of brake master cylinder (leakage) problems.

and brakes locked up the front wheels.

ABS, Anti-lock Braking System, should have prevented actual lockup. Or did you mean to say so close to lockup that ABS kicked in. "Vibratory" "feel" of the brake pedal..??

In the past 10 years I have had 2 instances wherein I felt that had ABS not activated and thereby needlessly elongated my stopping distance I would not have rear-ended the car in front. We don't often have instances wherein PANIC braking is actually required so ABS activation is rarely encountered and therefore the additional stopping distance comes an unexpected surprise.
