Can I do this myself, or must the dealer perform the work in order to retain warranty status? I would like to save some money if possible. It goes in for an oil change and they said last time that it needs rear brakes as well. If I can do it without voiding warranty I am going to tell them No.

At the kind of mileage you must have accrued, should have accrued, there is no brake component warranty. And it would be unusual for front brakes to wear out in the warranty period, let alone the rear.
