British Columbia Car Insurance Companies

i am almost furious this morning when my wife told me that since May 2008 we have been paying CDN$160 per month for 12 months. when May 2009 comes we would have paid the insurance company a total of CDN$1920. i just cannot imagine how expensive that is.

to all those british columbia 09 corolla owners, how much are you paying each month and who is your insurance company.

ours is the full coverage plan including theft/loss of car.

thanks in advance for any inputs you can share on this thread.

Amazing how you think that's a rip. That's the going rate for most of Canada with clean driving record.
I thought BC was government-sponsored rates....so you're also paying in your taxes?
same as viper over there. I also want to add I hate ICBC, its a monopoly and its robbery. That's all Im going to say. If you work for ICBC you need to drink a quart of motor oil and chase it with a match. Thanks.

yes we are also paying tax.
insurance in stupid to begin with. but 160 for a 2009 vehicle isnt bad at all. i'm 23, single, living in st. catharines, driving about 1800km a month and i pay 185 a month. and i think that's pretty sweet deal compared to the other companies like TD/RBC/State Farm i would have been paying well over $235 a month. my sister lives in the greater toronto area (brampton) and pays around 210$ and she's 27 and drives a 2008 mazda3.

$185/month 500/1000 deductibles, with one free at fault accident with ING insurance.

mind you..this is all in ontario.
I am paying about $600 per year for my 2009 Corolla with the following coverage

- full replacement value for 4 years
- $2 million for liability
- theft, vandalism
- $500 deductible if I am responsible and $0 if I am not responsible for an accident
- windshield replacement deductible $100
- I am the main driver and my wife as the second driver

I am in Montreal and insured with La Capitale Assurances Générales

I heard that in Quebec, car insurance is much less expensive than anywhere else in Canada. Is that true?

this is what im talking about. imagine $600 only for 1 year coverage. i really have this feeling we are being ripped off here in British Columbia.

Could be worse, you could be in Ontario. It's even more expensive.
well nothing is going to change, even if we keep bitching about the ICBC insurance rates..
Wow, never knew 09 Corollas were so expensive to insure with ICBC.

Its also odd in how they charge the rates because our relatives have an 00 Sienna, we have a 02 Sienna. And the difference in insurance rates is $100-200. And we're paying less despite that they have a base and we have a loaded model and that their vehicle is older [same discount rate].

And agreed with the others, ICBC is robbery...
i am paying 171/month here in alberta for my 09 xrs. i am 23 and with TD. i have complete coverage along with that 5 year vehicle replacement cost program. funny thing is i enquired about my insurance on a 2008 WRX STI and guess what....its only $10 more than my 09 corolla per month (181/month). i just dont understand how that works . anyway, rates are higher in alberta compared to BC. hungT1999 you are lucky paying only 600/month...only wish that could happen here as well... :sosad:.

Depends on how old you are, distance to work and the type of commute. In Ontario, if you have to go in/out of the city of Toronto, you're gonna pay more (b/c of heavier traffic). Everywhere across Canada, if you're 16-24, you pay nearly 2x.

my wife and i are in our mid 40s and both driving for 25 yrs plus without any driving violation record. my wife takes the car to work 3 times a week for a total of 88kms. we take the car to church on sundays, supermarket, library and other nearby places. the car will be 1 year old on May 8th with a little over 9,000kms.

we are twice as old than kniterider09 who is 23 yrs old. he pays $171 and we pay $161. my wife has 40% discount. i dont really get it. what gives?

my friend all i can say is wow!. that is not right at all. you need to change your insurance company. there is no way you should be paying that much with everything you stated. it really doesnt matter how much you drive and where you drive to, if you have full coverage it really doesnt matter.... it will be one year in july for my car and i already have 23000 kms on it

you should shop around at other insurance places.... that's the only thing i can suggest. other than that i have no clue what to suggest but you are definitly getting overcharged!

anyone else want to compare their insurance estimates ?
There's not much choice in BC.
The basic must be covered by ICBC. The extras can be from others. Pricewise the savings is very mininal.
According to my insurance agent the price of coverage is mostly price/cost of repairs, Type of usage as in to and from work with pleasure or just pleasure, Age, and location. As in address.

what can your insurance agent say about what we pay? we live in Richmond, my wife works in downtown vancouver 3 times a week. 09 corolla (May 2008) BSM auto S with moonroof. 9,000kms. age both mid 40s. roadstar discount is 40%. no driving violation record ever.

You are damn lucky to have a 40% roadstar discount and only pay $160/month for insurance. Not to mention you live where drivers are slightly less incompetent compared to Vancouver where I currently reside, hence less dollars per month.

I used to pay $280/month (or the interest-free equivalent of about $230. Paid-off for the who year) with 20% discount for my XRS, and I'm 21 with a 100% clean driving record.

I somewhat agree with you, but it's way too easy to say that ICBC is the big robber in BC. Not to sound like a complete douche but people got to understand that the lower mainland region has more auto crime, road accidents, and not to mention to horrors of incompetent drivers compared to the rest of BC. Which in theory if you live in Smithers you're paying significantly less for insurance for the same car than you would in Vancouver.

$160 a month for 12 months is robbery. my brother in law in los angeles is just paying $80 a month for 6 months only for a 2009 camry. he has only been a driver for 7 yrs in the US. no record and age 51. he is insured with AAA.
