I'm thinking about trying to get an Amsoil Bypass Filter system to put in my 95 w/ 5SFE. I was looking at a single-filter setup that tee's off the oil press sensor and drops the oil back in at the oil cap. I'd like to do the dual filter relocation so I can use a larger filter than the little bitty factory thing. I just can't find room anywhere. I'll be lucky if I can stuff a single-unit under the battery tray where I was thinking. I don't know where else there is room?

That is, if I can find $180 >.< lol

What with the gear driving the counter-shaft and cam, how long could I likely push a by-pass equipped oil change? 10k? You can do 10k with a 7.3L Powerstroke, which gear-drives the cam off the crank and uses 3000+PSI to drive the injectors.

Thoughts?

Because a ByPass filtration system offers SIGNIFICANTLY improved protection over a full-flow. You misread my reasoning.

Lets see, regarding not worth it-
Lets say 3000 miles change. I spend about $30 on an oil change.
In the space of 9000 miles, thats $90 spent.
Intall bypass-
9000 mile oil change, $30.

Thats $60 saved.

So, over the course of 27000.
27000 miles. 3k oil change @$30.
Thats 9 oil changes. $270.

Thats a savings of $180. System paid for.

Yes, I do a 3k oil change with good synthetics when I use a full-flow system.
I'm not lazy, I'm more worried about engine longevity.

there was no misreading, you didnt mention engine longevity in the OP. however, we have plenty of people who do 3K miles oil changes and the engine is just fine the way it is, lasting well over 200K. so i wouldnt worry to much about longevity. i do understand the savings and an oil change isnt cheap if ya buy the good stuff, so if thats worth it for ya then go for it. not sure if anyone has done it. below the batterty tray would prolly be a good place.

I had considered the bypass system... seriously I did. I average approximately 1000 km a week.

I now use a larger 3614 filter (from the V6) in my 4 cyl every 5000 kms, and change oil at 8000 miles....or 10000kms. I use Esso XD3 0w-40 or 0w-30. I installed a drain valve in place of the drain plug, and an oil change is very quick.

I would consider an oil analysis first, so you will know what contaminants you have, and what wear metals are showing up.
Black oil may be caused by excess soot/carbon and blow by.
Bypass filters do not neutralize oil acidity
In my situation, the extra cost of the bypass filter kit was not worthwhile.

I have consider a bypass system too... but it's just too much work to do...
and regular oil changes is enough the engine to outlast the body...
For extended oil changes, just use long-drain capacity oil (GC and M1 0W40) and you will be fine.

I use oil approved for 15k in diesel trucks, let alone gassers. And yes, its gas engine approved. Well, I usually use it.
No, its not Amsoil. lol.

Yet I dare not push it past 6k. I fear for the filtration. Call me paranoid, but I'm sticking to my guns.

No fear, I am using GC and heading 5.5k right now.
I guess you are using Rotalla, Mobil Delvac, or Delo, those are pretty robust oil!

Schaeffer's actually. Supreme 7000 typically. Molybdenum is awesome stuff.

I'm on my 2nd PUREOne filter at 3000-3500 miles. Or ACDelco. Depending on which end of town I swing by.
