There are many possible causes of over heating.

Make sure there is sufficient coolant in the radiator.

check the quality of the coolant.

check the condition of the radiator.

make sure the cooling fan works properly.

make sure the coolant is circulating

i.e. Make sure the thermostat is not stuck closed or the water pump is
not malfunctioning.

The cooling system is not properly dissipating the heat produced by the
engine, WBMG ;)

If you overheated the engine, the thermostat needs replacing. The wax
pellet mechanism that operates the thermostat is usually ruined after
only one overheat. Make certain that when you replace it you orientate
the thermostat exactly the way it was, (right side up and sometimes
forward as well). Check the cap operating pressure and fluid level of
coolant overflow container and radiator as well. You may have a blocked
hose from the coolant container to the radiator neck. Check water pump
operation and belt tension.
