I see videos of folks installing it but from what I can find the roof rack capacity of the highlander is only 100 pounds.

I have a 2006 Highlander Hybrid.

Personally, I'd take the chance. As long as you spread your weight properly, say by laying down two egg crate mattress on top of each other to sleep on, and also you kept the weight to one person, you'd be fine. Two people, forget it with a 1st Gen or any other flavor of Highlander.

I have a 2006 Highlander Hybrid.
I used a yakima cross bars clamped to the existing siderails to carry a 14' kayak.
I wouldn't use the factory cross bars.
