2001 Prius

Hi folks,

Our trusty 2001 Prius won't start.

A multimeter shows about 5.5 V on the Optima battery.
With the ignition key in the "On" position there is a weird noise coming from the relay box in the engine compartment.
Nothing electrical of course works (headlights, horn).

Should I just go ahead and get a replacement battery or do some more investigating?
Battery must be at least 5 years pld - probably longer.

Cheers

Most auto parts shops will test your battery. That will give you an answer. Optimas are good batteries but not a forever battery.

The test is done for now, now try charging it preferably slowly to full and Then test it. If over 3-4 years old in extreme cold or heat operation it probably needs t/be replaced anyway but worth a try. Luck. :cowboy:

Optima redtop batteries really are no better than anything you can get off the shelf - they were bought out several years ago, and the only quality attribute is they can be mounted in any direction.... otherwise, you're buying into a name.

Pull the battery out and try to charge it out of the car - that will tell you:
1) if the battery will take a charge or not
2) if the battery does take a charge, there could be a draw in the car
