Ok so I went around pricing catalytic converters for my car. For the sr5 they are 149ish and they gts one is 130, on top of that they can get the one for the gts as direct fit.

What I am wondering is if the gts catalytic converter has the tube off the right side that feeds back to the air box. I know some efi cars do have them. If it has that I cannot see a reason why I couldn't just buy the gts one and shove it in.

nah and my camera is broken. I found out about them before my car when my buddy buy an older 240sx. His had the same thing. I don't think the gts has it. But for the $20 price difference that will help with the other things I need to replace so it can't hurt to ask.

there isn't any sort of carb heater running off the cat for the 4age as there isn't a carb.

also, I don't think they are the same length.... flange is the same between 4afe and 4age, though.

I put a Magnaflow cat on my car last year... was a 1pc straight cat so no, nothing to recirculate.

Just get a universal one welded in, probably not a big diff.

Not welding one in, IMO it's stupid after spending 140 on the down pipe and another 160 or so from the cat to the muffler. Only thing that hasn't been replaced is the cat. I like being able to pull the pieces that are bad and replace them on my own. I at the moment do not have a welder.

actually they usually go from the intake to an air pump and then from there to some sort of air control valve (usually electronically actuated) and from there down to the cat :p:

I don't think any of our cars have air pumps

considering the cat isn't far from the intake manifold on a 4af... I would guess that it's actually not recirculating... (and correct, corolla's don't have smog pumps)... but it's actually just a line for a heater for the carb....

Well I actually just looked it up, it came up as the same part number for both the gts and sedan/sr5. merit #642403

The 4af came up with an option for the air tube, but only that.

yeah there is a rubber hose connected to the air filter box on the bottom side near the firewall, From there is goes straight to the cat, no air pump. Maybe the engine sucking in air acts like a pump. My best guess is to recirculate unburnt fuel. My cat as clogged as it is doesn't do that anymore and back fires now.

Rockauto has cats from $65 to $126...and there are discount codes floating around that will save you a little bit more off of those prices.
