08 XLE 165k miles.
Replaced plugs (with OEM plugs) at 140K.
CEL came on, a trip to the DangerZone revealed codes:
P0306 P0059 P0102 P0113 C1201 C1246 P0300 P0305

I've searched on here and read about a few of these codes, but I haven't seen anyone have them all.

The CEL was cleared and came back on 5 miles later. It cleared itself the next day but then returned the next day.

I have looked them all up. I know the p0305 & p0306 are misfires on cylinder 5/6. p0300 is random misfire. But I'm not feeling any hesitation or stumbles, roughness. I haven't noticed the engine misfire.

I cleaned the MAF with the CRC brand MAF spray and I replaced the air filter.

I don't have the funds to fire the parts canon or pay for diagnostics. Do any forum members have experience similar and suggestions of things I can check?

How can I tell the MAF sensor is working? Can I use meter to read resistance across the pins?

Thanks in advance.

Do you mean XLS and not XLE? Your profile says you drive a 2011 Corolla LE

Which codes came back?

You will get a P0300 anytime you have a P0301/302/303 etc

The ignition coil connector latches are very brittle and tend to break easily. Perhaps cylinders 5 and 6 have connectors that are not seating, but that would usually cause a P035x code for ignition coil circuit fault.

P0113 means there is an issue with the intake air temperature sensor circuit. This sensor is part of the MAF sensor. This might be a poor connection at the MAF sensor.

P0102 means there is an issue with the MAF sensor voltage being low. This might also be a poor connection at the MAF sensor (see P0113 above)

There is no code P0059 nor is there a C0059

C1201 sets in the in the Vehicle Stability Control because of the engine control malfunction.

C1246 means there is a problem with the brake master cylinder pressure sensor

I really need to know which codes came back. Even if the light is off the codes will be stored unless you clear them or disconnect the battery.

FixItt,
Thank you so much for the reply! Yes XLS is correct. Not XLE.
I'm sorry for the delayed response.
Cleared the codes and they returned within 10 mins. The codes that returned:
C1201 Engine Control System Malfunction
P0057 Bank 2 Sensor 2

I don't understand the C1201 but the P0057 seems to point to a sensor...

C1201 is stored in the computer for the ABS and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC). This will go away once the fault causing the check engine light to come on is repaired. If the PCM reports that there is a problem with something it controls or monitors, it is telling the other modules that something is wrong and not to rely on any data it presents. Therefore, the other modules shut down because they rely on the PCM.

You are correct - the P0057 is most likely an oxygen sensor. This code points to the downstream sensor (Sensor 2) , located near the outlet of the catalytic converter on the front bank (by the radiator) (Bank 2)

If you decide to tackle this or hire someone to replace it, please use only DENSO parts or a sensor from the dealer. The sensor is easily replaced by working under the vehicle. Note how the wires for the front sensors are held by a curly spring. Make sure you get this back in right. Take a few pictures for reference - they will be invaluable if you forget how the wiring is interlaced in the wire holder. Use plenty of penetrating oil on the sensor threads before removing it. Let it soak in for at least 10 minutes. I recommend PB Blaster over anything else. WD40 is for amateurs and means Water Displacing. I have tried a lot of penetrating oils over my 40 years in the bay and PB Blaster is the best by far.

The new sensor will come with a packet of anti-seize compound. There is enough in that packet for 20 sensors so don't think that you need to use all of it. Lightly coat the threads and keep the stuff away from the sensing element. When tightening the sensor, it only needs to be as tight as an oil pan drain plug.

Let me know if you need any more information.

That would be the left bank.

The Denso part number is 234-4260

O2 sensor arrived this afternoon and got it installed.
I ordered an OBD2 scanner too. It hasn't arrived yet. So CEL still lit, but hope it goes out soon and the issue is resolved. Thanks for the help.

Some manufacturers keep the MIL lit even after the repair is complete and the PCM sees the fault is no longer present. Some turn it out but keep the code stored.

New vehicles have what are called permanent codes. No scanner will clear them. The PCM decides if/when the light should go out.

Try explaining that to a customer who just paid $$$ to have the check engine light fixed, and they pick it up and the light is still on.

What scanner did you purchase?

I'm glad to help and remember times before the Intarwebs when information was difficult to obtain.

After dinner I started her up all error lights (CEL, VSC) are cleared! I graciously thank you for helping me.
I am 45, my first car had points & condenser. Haynes, Chilton and the library were the resources. My carb had more vacuum hoses than I could count.
The Avalon has 166k miles and its hard to believe it when you look at it or drive it. The V6 still has lots of power and is smooth.

The code scanner is BAFX products 34t5 bluetooth. $21 on amazon. Its a start. I mostly selected it because it had 7500 reviews, many were 5 star. Got any affordable ones you can recommend?

Update: The codes have not returned. I am so glad this was something I could fix (after TN helped me figure out what to replace).
