I recently changed my '07 Camry Hybrid oil for the first time to Mobil 1 synthetic. Before I had my mechanic change my oil every 5k miles. My question is, now that I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic, how often should I change my oil? Every 5k, 7k, 10k? Also does the fact that my car is a hybrid and doesn't use the gas engine as often mean that I can stretch out my oil change frequencies?

And I'd like to add to his thread, when should I change the oil the first time? I've only got 1100 miles on my '08 Camry hybrid and wondered if I should change the oil now or can I wait awhile?

Follow the recommendations in your owner's manual. Just because you have a hybrid doesn't necessarily mean you can stretch out your oil change intervals. Remember, you are constantly shutting down and restarting the engine.

Back in the olden days it was good sense to dump your factory oil after a few hundred miles to rid it of the metal shavings created by the break in process.

Modern engines are all CNC manufactured to much more consistent tolerances, the metallurgy is much better and our oil formulations are much more highly developed.

Some auto manufacturers caution against changing the factory break in oil too soon, saying it contains special polymers which aid the break in process.

Follow the recommended change interval for engine oil.

The particles that are filtered out (eg 20 micron) are too large and cause gouging, scuffing etc is bad, that is why there is a filter.

The smaller wear particles will be there to burnish. Cylinder walls and piston rings are an example of a worn in fit.

Transmission on the other hand is one that I would have a greater concern. I am unfamiliar with the fluid type in the hybrid, but have worked with limited slip units, wet clutches, and so on, and find that wear material should be removed.

TTT . Has anyone used the AMSoil product line wrt the TCH? They list both a 5w-20 Syn (XLM) and a 0w-20 Syn (ASM) - I'm leaning toward the ASM 0w-20 100% Syn... AMSoil also lists the EAO10 oil filter for the 2008 2AZ-FE. I assume the 2009 is the same...

I have some SSO 0w-30 for my other vehicle but based on what I've read on this Forum - it may be too thick (too bad as it's their best oil). I know some hate AMSoil and to each his own , I just like their product specs and I'm already a member so the price diff is available...

Also my search indicated 4 quarts with filter is a normal DIY quantity. Is that what other TCH owners who change their own oil are seeing ?

Does anyone have a Toyota part number for the oil plug gasket that gets replaced at each change ? :)

EDIT : I searched and found what I think is the oil plug gasket part number . then searched thru our Supporting
Vendor - ToyotaPartsOutlet.com finding 90430-12031 : Does this fit the TCH 2AZ-FE ?

I believe if you look closely, your manual says that you can use a synthetic oil but that you must stay with the 5,000 mile maintenance schedule.

As far as changing the oil too soon, Toyota does not use a "break in oil". You can change it anytime before the scheduled change that you wish. I normally change my cars every 5,000 miles anyway with a new engine being changed at the 2,500 and 5,000 mile mark for the first two.

To be honest about it, using that schedule for changes, it will not make much if any difference what oil you use. Dino, Synthetic, blend, Amsoil, Mobil 1, Rotella, whatever you use should make the engine last the life of the car.

Once your warranty period has expired, feel free to increase the mileage to what you like. Some of the guys I know go to 12,000 or 15,000 miles between changes using a premium synthetic. As long as you use a good filter (Puralator Pure 1, Mobil 1, Amsoil, Wix, etc.) and check the oil level often, these motors will last a long time.

This topic is one that will never be resolved and each person needs to do what they are comfortable with. I am known to be anal about car maintenance thus my 5,000 mile changes. I like doing them and that is fine. Others like going longer, some change every 3,000.

Just did my first oil change at about 1,500 miles to Mobil 1 synthetic 5-30w. Been using this for about 25-30 years or so and feel that it is worth a few extra bucks for superior lubrication.
I would have no problems whatsoever going 7,500 miles with this oil (depending on driving conditions) but if there were any problems down the road I wouldn't want Toyota to say that I voided the warranty on the engine by not following recommended intervals. So I will stick to the 5k changes to play it safe.
FWIW, I recently read a very interesting article about unnecessary and too frequent oil changes. The amount of used oil that is generated by this practice is unbelievable! Of course, the oil companies actively promote the standard "every 3k miles" oil change practice which is complete overkill under most conditions.

I agree on your opinion of oil change intervals using synthetic. One of my concerns with Mobil One is they changed their base about 18 months ago...

Regarding your decision to run 5-30w instead on 0w-20 or 5w-20 , can you enlighten us ? Also did you replace the oil plug gasket ? :)

Not aware of any change in the Mobil 1 formula...as far as the viscosity, I just usually prefer to have a bit more on the high end for those 100+ summer days...although with synthetic I don't feel as strongly about it since it does provide superior protection under extreme conditions IMO. Also, since it rarely gets below freezing here in So. Cal I feel that 5w is plenty "thin" enough on those cold mornings. In other words, it seems like a good range for my environment and useage.
Had the Toyota dealership do the oil change so I'm not sure about the gasket...I assume they would do that if necessary but I wouldn't bet on it!
