Check engine and loose gas cap today

My check engine light came on today on my 04 tacoma with 114,000 miles. Its never been on before so I checked the gas cap and it was in fact loose, it hadn't been tightened until it clicks. I tightened it but the light is still on. My question is how long does it take to realize the cap is on tight or do I need to reset the light somehow?
