Hello community! I figured I'd ask your advice.
I installed an MST intake. I love it.
I got an engine trouble code at the start of the week (04-27-20).
I used an OBD2 scanner to clear it. I don't recall the exact code but the message in the car said it had to do with the throttle position or idle.
This the only mod I've done that could affect it. I'm assuming it's the aftermarket intake.

I don't want to go back to the stock intake!

I've checked all fittings since I've read it may be a vacuum leak. Everything looks well connected and secure.
I handled the MAF sensor extremely carefully when installing. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have damaged it.
My other thought was trying to have the ECU relearn the throttle position, but I'm not sure how to do that correctly. I thought it would relearn it on it's own if I let it idle long enough. I've already sat in the car and let it idle for over 2 hours (I took a phone call during that time!).

Any ideas on how I can get around this, or resolve it?

Old fashion ECU reset (battery disconnect) + 5 minutes of idling should resolve it if it's a simply re-learn. But if that doesn't, then you may have forgot to plug something in tightly, backwards, or have something loose.

Thanks Desy.
I was really hoping you would be the one to chime in!
I'll try it. I appreciate your time and input.

  • Buy MAF cleaner & throttle cleaner
  • Remove MAF
  • Spray MAF cleaner into MAF
  • Clean/brush throttle with throttle cleaner
  • Reinstall everything
  • Unhook battery for more than 90 seconds
  • Start car (it won't start)
  • Start car again
  • Drive like normal and the car will eventually relearn itself

How many miles or days did you have the MST intake installed before triggering an engine trouble code? It would learn and/or also produce a code while actually driving... Avoid letting it idle for more than 5 minutes, and never more than 10 minutes.

It really sounds to me as if you have an air leak somewhere. I would check again the fit around the TB and any tubes going to the TB. Oh, and TB = throttle body :)

I installed in on 04-23-20 and got the trouble code on 04-27-20.
I would estimate I drove it 100, or so, miles between the time I installed it and when the code popped up.
I thought it would learn on it's own too; which is what's worrying me!
I'll heed the others' advice and check the TB and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
I've never had an engine code pop up from an air intake!:cautious:

Just put the original Toyota intake back and take the car to Toyota dealer and ask them to sort out the problem for you :ROFLMAO: and try the TRD intake next time instead :D

P0505 is related to idle air control / idle rpm... Everything is still properly plugged in? How's your idle quality? Is it unstable or higher than normal?
My idle is running high at times.
I think everything is plugged in properly. The only thing that was unplugged was the MAF sensor, but that is plugged properly (as far as I can tell).

Did you replace the Toyota air filter with the MST one ? I heard people had problem with idling when they replaced the K & N air filter as it allowed too much air flow intake and damaged their MAF sensors. Maybe find a friend who has the Corolla and test your MAF in their car to see if their car has the same idling problem.

Try contacting MST about their possible product problem... It doesn't take much of a flaw in the intake system to throw off MAF readings. I'm not impressed at all by these MST guys.

That's why I like dealing with Injen once again as they have tremendous experience, and their product is well backed by many years of research and development.

My Check Engine Light has come on.

There are a few steps you need to go through to determine the nature of the problem:
  1. Determine how long it took for the check engine light to come on after you've installed your Injen Cold Air Intake? If it has been awhile then it may be something unrelated to your intake.
  2. Find out your vehicle's CEL code (using a diagnostic tool) and email it - along with photos of the intake installed - to [email protected]
