Check engine light on

I tried the search but it doesn't seem to be working right now.

2003 Corolla, 172000km

Check engine light came on the other day. Still driving the same as it always has. Gas cap is tight. Any other easy things I can check without getting a code reader?

Not really. In the states places like Autozone and advanced auto check codes (except California) for free. Any places that can check it for free in Canada?
cel cure=

2003 corolla ce, 90,000 miles., after many hours of research on this and other forums= i bought "maf" sensor cleaner. cleaned the maf sensor as recommended . disconectted the batterry first. now about a month later cel light has not reappeared. idle is bearable. no other problems observed. good luck.
It could be anything, just find a reader and remove all doubt.

Absolutely, doing otherwise is just chasing elusive solutions with parts that will probably just cost more. Avoid the dealer, mine once charged me $90 for a scan; for a problem they had caused...sigh.
MAF cleaning might not even be the reason for CEL.

With the amount of mileage on that Corolla, it might have been a false reading of a bad cat. converter.
