It snowed here today and I got to use the 4wd for the first time since I got the truck 3 weeks ago , but when I switched out of 4H it made a unusual clunk coming from the front . I switched between 2 and 4H a couple of different times during tha day and it didnt do every time . Anybody know anything about this ? The truck only has 900 miles on it , also I noticed a funny smell when getting out of the truck ? could the 4wd just be breaking in ? Hate to sound like such a newbee but this is really bothering me . any help would be greatly appreaciated . thanks:thumbup::thumbup:

The clunk is normal. The funny smell is something different. The smell might be the exhaust getting wet, and burning off. I have noticed this on all my vehicles.

I noticed if I switch the dial back to 4wd and let the vehicle coast with my foot off the fuel pedal, I get no clunk. In my case the clunk always occurs when there is load on the drive train. ie: Still on the fuel.

The weird smell could be as simple as grease being thrown from the driveshaft onto the exhaust.

The answer is in your question: the truck is only 3 weeks old, and you've only used the 4wd once. It's not broken in yet. Front drive train probably isn't lubricated or worn enough to mesh smoothly. Not to mention you were under load. Either way, it's normal like others said.

You don't need to put the truck into neutral to switch from 2WD to 4WD the manual clearly states that 4WD can be engaged in gear at any speed up to 55mph. The truck only needs to be put into neutral when going from 4HI to 4LO and vise versa. The clunk is the front driveline disengaging under tension from trying to turn on a non-slippery surface.

When engaging and disengaging 4wd, do it while you are coasting or going down hill. It will be a lot smoother than if you do it while you are accelerating.
