Okay, I am think of getting a cold air kit for my truck for a little extra power, mpg, and throttle response. i know stupid question but what cold air kit would you recommend for Tacomas 4.0L? And do you see any improvement in power? Gas mileage? Throttle response?
Thanks...

its a little more expensive than other intake systems, but get the URD TCAI;).
trust me, you get what you pay for... its probably the best you can buy.

fxt then qft!

Too bad I live in California where the CAI isn't smog legal. Damned smog Nazi's.
I have had.......

stock w/secondary filter removed

stock air box/K&N drop in + exhaust

AFE Magnum Force Stage 1-same exhaust

TRD

Very happy with the TRD, biggest difference of all I`ve tried.
Biggest noticable difference, best sound, best performance.

1) Yes
2) No
3) YES!

Have to add.........
The no on question #2 is relative to how I drive, it`s my own fault because as it gets faster and sounds better I can`t keep my foot out of it. It`s actually stayed about the same and even improved a bit although I do not have the numbers to prove it, I did notice an increase in my range as shown by the amount of gas left in the tank on our honker hunts this winter.
The gas warning light used to come on just as we were hitting the home stretch now after the TRD I can go back and forth to work for 2 days after the trip before the light comes on.

Has anyone tracked there MPG an seen any improvement with an addition of a CAI?

I'm going to go with "no". More air requires more fuel.

If you're looking for an increase in mpg, back away from the CAI.
I have had a K&N CAI and switched to the TRD for couple reasons.
K&N- Never had any problems with it. responsiveness and power increased. gas mileage dropped. not really sure why. no change in driving style. the only thing i can think is the maf sensor said more air comin in lets add more gas. the downfall to the K&N is that it is exposed. For off roading, not a good idea. Ya its got that "shield" around it but thats got little holes all around.
TRD- its what i originally wanted but didn't have the money. found one on ebay and didn't think twice. after switching my gpms went back up. go figure. it has less noise but still can be loud. it gives you the same responsiveness and little extra power as k&n BUT its somewhat protected from elements and offroading. it comes in that cute little trd box. the best part, it in no way voids your warranty and dont' have to worry about any issues with that if anything happened to my baby.
i dont regret my trd cai one bit.

regardless of what intake you get, the point is same in all of em. lots more air without the restricting factory intake. the rest are details of element exposure, look, etc

what does fxt mean ? I know what qft means.
Yeah, what boone said, don`t do it for the mpg
nothing`s really going to make a big improvement on the mileage thing except maybe swapping in a 4cyl

I agree 100%

With the AFE my shift points changed and sometimes, mosttimes had to manually kick the lever over to 4 then back to 5 to get it to drop down into OD. Airflow/vacuum?? Don`t know. Just seemed like it was sucking too much air all the time.
I never really liked the three sided box it came with but the Stage 2 with the fully enclosed box wasn`t out yet and I thought it was a full box going by the pic in the ad.
Not to mention when you get on it it sounded like it was trying to claw it`s way out from under the hood.
Don`t get me wrong though, I insulated the box to help with the noise issue and I really liked the way my truck ran with it on except for the tranny thing and the open exposed one side of the box. I think the MAF calibrator and tuning would be a must with this CAI which was my next step........

Instead I got the TRD and all shifting went back to normal and my truck feels tight and responsive at all speeds.
Very happy with it

Don`t know if you do a lot of wheeling or mudding but for some reason the pass. side of the engine compartment seems to get hammered more than the drivers side?

qft = quoted for truth

I don't text hardly at all. I used to post on another forum a while back and we shortened everything because it was faster.
Thanks for all of the good information guys. I think i am going to save up a pick up the TRD CAI. Thanks again guys!:thumbup:
