Compact/Smaller Spare Tire

Due to wheel size changes in my Sienna 1999 through the years, I now have 17" mags/tire and a 15" spare tire. when the need arises, where should I mount (temporarily) the smaller size spare tire? I read somewhere that compact (smaller tire) spare should only be mounted in the rear? I'd appreciate advice, pls.
