Hello everybody... My truck started leaking motor oil and the mechanic told me my rear main seal was bad. I have a 1991 V6 auto 4x4. Is this something I can takle myself. The mechanic quoted me way more then I can afford. I know that the motor has to be pulled and the tranny/transfer case needs to be pulled apart as well. I was wondering if there is a step-by-step write up on pulling the motor from the truck. Any input would be nice. After being quoted I started thinking of just swapping the motor for something with a little more POWER!!! :naughty:

I've never done one on a Yota V6 but you may be able to do it with the motor in the truck. If you can get the tranny out you should be able to get to the rear main seal.

Just buy a manual.

I've had reasonably good success with a product called Auto-Rx to fix leaks. To learn more about it check out the two links below:

I'd also recommend that you replace your PVC valve as a faulty one can result in excessive internal pressure and cause leaks. Just because it rattles doesn't mean it's working correctly.
It may be worth a shot but I've never seen anything able to fix a main bearing seal leak except replacing it.

Pulling the engine to replace the rear main seal is silly.

The transmission and transfercase can be pulled with the engine left in place. It is a bit cumbersome but on a lift with a good trans jack, a competent mechanic could do that job in half a day. It's likely that you would be charged 10 hours of labor.

As far as tackling it yourself, it depends on your skill level. I suspect that if you have to ask then it would be a good thing to have it done by someone else.
