Searched in forum but to no avail.

I have a 92 4wd that has some issues. So, I stopped at an intersection today and decided that I may need 4wd to get across the road before another car t bones me. (By the way it is snowing, and my tires suck in the snow anyway) So I jump out and lock the hubs. Jump back in and put her in 4wd hi and ease off the clutch and here comes this loud clunk sound accompanied by a vibration. Not just any vibration though it actually felt like the right front wheel just drove over a speedbump. Obviously there isn't one there. Anyway I put it in 4 lo and again at every tire revolution there is a clunk and a jolt. So, i left the hubs locked but put it back in 2hi and it still does it, but not as bad. Then I unlock the hubs and it is fine, no problems at all. So I get under the truck and start looking around and noticed that the cv shaft on the passenger side kinda wobbled around a little at the 3rd member. I know this is not supposed to happen. So before I go and take everything apart, does anybody have any ideas at to what the problem may be and what it will take to repair it.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You sure you dont have a broken cv? A little play by the diff is okay. Check the brass sleeve that goes over the cv joint at the hub. (sorry I cannot remember the actual name)

Since it went away as soon as you unlocked the hubs, my guess its either the cv joints (or related hardwear) or the hubs. When was the last time you rebuilt them?

I have only owned the truck 3 weeks. I paid little money for it and for good reasons... lol. I haven't really had a chance to look at it. As soon as I get a warmer dry day I will take off the cv shaft and check it out. I have replaced lots of cv shafts, but this is the first time I have ever heard a noise and clunk like this. Its almost scary. Thats why I was kinda wonderin if it was inside the diff.

Oh and another thing I forgot to mention is at one point yesterday with the hubs locked and in 4wd I was crawling and the truck just stopped. like someone threw a wrench in the front diff. I gave it some gas and it clunked, the front end kinda hopped and it started moving again. Its just weird.

What kind of surface were you on with 4wd?

This almost sounds like you have mis-matched gears in your diffs. Have you checked the fluid levels in your differentials yet?

I would still pull the front hubs off and check them out. They are a little tricky to get back together correctly, perhaps the PO tried to rebuild them but didnt assemble them correctly.

Refer to this link for an easy how-to rebuild aisin manual hubs.

I was driving on snow during all these trials. I was wondering about the mis-matched gears myself, but I really think it is some kind of mechanical damage in the differential. I have not checked the fluids yet, there is still snow all over the place and I dont have access to a garage at the moment. As soon as I get a garage I am going to tear apart the front end and take a look.

Needless to say, I have got issues. At least I know what it is now. Now I have to figure out what I am going to do from here....
