After getting the notice everyone on here is talking about, in the mail (oil sludge) I decided that since my car is too old (1998) and doesnt really smoke, that I was safe, but Just to be on the safe side, I was going to sea foam it, and do the oil changes as directed 500 miles after, and 1500 after that.

Well when I went to open the cap to where you pour the oil in, I noticed a very very thick build up up to the cap itself, where I cannot see how oil could be poured in there. I get my oil changed more than routinely, I always have it done before its even scheduled. Of course the toyota dealer I go to closed at 1, will be closed tomorrow, and monday for new years, and the toyota in a neighboring town closed at 4, and I discovered this about 4:05.

I ran it to an avis lube type oil place and showed them, and they procede to tell me they have a mixture of stuff to sell me blah blah blah, put it up on a jack and drain the oil as its running and pour the mixture in as its running. Has anyone else had this problem, or know what could cause it?

Sorry for the long thread, I'm still kind of freaking out about it and frantic noplace is open to answer me all weekend.

Oh and its a v6 if that is any difference

There is a baffle under the oil cap to keep oil from getting slung directly on it. Same for the breather & PCV valves. You can't see down into the engine. it doesn't amtter what's on the baffle. It's like looking at an asshole to see how the stomache is. Doesn't really matter.

That makes me feel better. (I was at my moms house when I checked mine, and I checked hers and I could see down in there, and it looked so clean, and mine looked so
ghetto") And it kinda makes a knocking noise and I was hoping it was that. What is the baffle thing made of? Because they guy from the oil place was scraping layers of really burned looking oil off of it. I guess thats normal. I don't know, I was just so concerned about it being sludged, then I thought it was the opposite... I just hope its clean in there. Ha... Thanks for your replys, guys!

I know theres several posts about it, so please don't say there are, and that I need to search for them, but is it safe to put a little sea foam in the oil just to be on the safe side (provided i change the oil 500 miles later, then 1500 after that? I have read many conflicting views on that, and don't know what to believe. I've read that its a good idea, and a horrible idea. So any input is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Yeah I was the same, thought I had a major sludge problem (lol maybe I do)... but thats not really an indicator, because since its high up etc it cools at a different rate to the rest of the engine and makes the oil burn onto it or something... thats how it is in my case, can scrape the light layer off with a finger nail because its just baked on, not sludgy at all.

where did this oil guy scrape the crusted crap to? inside the crankcase? haha (if he did its not funny).

uhm well follow the instructions or use a little less than what the instruction says and u should be fine.

this is my third seafoam attempt. not nearly as bad as the first one. the 2nd one was done too prematurely.
