Hey whats up
Well tommorow this shop reopens that does really good custom exhausts. I was just wondering is it worth it to get a new resonator or keep the stock one?

We talking about the same thing? Its a muffler just so everything isn't as loud. What do you mean by a fake something?

yea buddy, i don't know what dark mastyr is talking about, a resonator is definitely a very good idea, it will smoothen out the sound of your exhaust considerably, especially considering your 4 banger.

your stock resonator may be restrictive with your new exhaust piping, i'd recommend getting an aftermarket one put in when they do your exhaust.

I have one anyway, it gets rid of the like farting / popping noises that some exhaust's make.

my cat-back costed some good money man, but i got the best shit. i have a custom 2.5 inch madrel bent Brullen exhaust with a resonator and a dual tip muffler. bout 500 cdn at the time for everything, but buddy, it sounds so deep and smooth, i love it.

since you have a 4 banger you should get 2.25 inch piping and get a resonator, you'll regret it if ya take the cheap way out man, trust me.

What the hell are you talking about? Do you even know what a resonator is?? Obviously you dont, a resonator is something that helps bring the sound levels down on an exhaust. Most cars come from the factory with at least one of them stock... Some luxury cars use 2 resonators before the muffler(s). And how would a resonator make your car look like more than it is when it is UNDERNEATH it?

Goddamn man, consider yourself :eek:wnedsmas
Ok we obviously have a misunderstanding here. I (and a good number of people I know) use the term resonator interchangeably with the bigass coffee cans that people put at the end of their pipe<--that's what I thought Lyons451 was referring to.

Not really. I differentiate between a "muffler" which MUFFLES the sound versus those coffee cans which make the sound nasty, loud, and annoying. As far as I know, it was pretty common for people (at least aftermarket-wise) to refer to the coffee cans as resonators since they were built for the sole purpose of resonating the sound in order to produce this loudass sound which pisses off the neighborhoods. But hey I guess you guys don't apply.

thats what I thought. Though what core size would be best in the res 2" or 2.5" with 2.25 piping without loss of low-end torque but? Do you want more constriction or do you want a bigger core?

These are actual resonator tips.

More shown here

They were popular with owners of MG midgets, bug eyed sprites, etc...

And yes these do sound very crappy.

The popular install was just the resonated tip with no muffler, so they were very loud (read illegal)

I am getting ready to have a dual tip muffler installed on my 2001 corolla and I plan on having another resonater added to soften the sound on it (the nice type of resonator that is).

Yah Lyons go with the magnaflow.... it will sound nice but not so loud that I could hear your car coming from a mile away, just when I pass you by.

essentially, a muffler is a resonator and vice versa, but so people dont get confused, they call the muffler a muffler and the resonator (the midpipe muffler) a resonator.

those tips are not what makes an exhaust sound bad. its the resonator or muffler behind it. tips do nothing to affect the sound, theyre basically for your visual preference.

there are tons of other factors that contribute to the exhaust sound. a muffler and resonator dont make up the entire airflow system.

if you already have an aftermarket exhaust, a 2nd resonator will smooth out the tone of it and possibly make it sound infinitely better. if the price is right, go for it.

I got a magnaflow resonator and a muffler. Its loud. It's not annoying lound, since it produces a low rumble instead of farting sounds (and thats on I4).
My friend can hear me block away when I'm coming over, and that's enough. You don't want it sound THAT loud. It'll get annoying.

actually tips do affect the way car sounds. my first car was a 85 escort wagon my muffler fell off so i ripped out the entire exhaust system and built headers and a straight exhaust with nothing to restict it. needless to say the car was loud. so i took the tip i had in my back yard (specs: 4inch tip hollow 4-6inches long) and it changed the tone of the car after a few minutes of driving. the car had a deep low tone and when i revved it it didn't pop or anything it still had a deep roar. i did the same set up to my 84 ranger and got the same results as well as on my 85 accord. so don't say they make no difference. i've been messing with exhaust tips for a while now to find one that make the sound i like on my wagon. my set up is 2x cherry bomb turbo II mufflers and no resonator so i got a good deep soud already just need the added benifit of the tips. oh yeah it's a 1mzfe btw;)

ive got a twin tip magnaflow muffler (2 tips ive found are louder than single) and although its not too bad, driving to work everyday i gets a little bit too much, especially when youre tired, i'm gonna put another resonator on... which involves lowering the cat back exhaust as you'll prob see that theres jack all room under there.
