This weekend I will be replacing the gasket and tube grommets, due to seepage on the firewall side of the cover. Ordered all my parts through TOYOTAPARTSMAN here on the forums, super nice guy! 3 questions:

FSM says final torque value is 33 ft. lbs. for the grommets and nuts? Seems a bit much, IMHO.

I am having a tube of the FIPG sent with the parts. Looking at the FSM, I can see where the stuff needs to go, but how much? Just a dab, and spread with finger to a thin layer? Or like toothpaste on a brush?

FSM also says the grommets have marks on them that need to be lined up. The picture is not clear as to what the marks look like. They also specify something about 15 degrees from center??

I will also be replacing the cam plugs and sealing those also with the FIPG.

Thoughts??

Just a good solid dab...let it setup a bit...then put the cover on. I'm sure the instructions on the tube will tell you what you need to do. ;)

When you pull the cover, you should notice some overlap of the old sealant...make sure those don't fall back into the engine!!

Not sure about the grommets...didn't pay attention to any alignment marks. :(

33 ft. lbs sound right off the top of my head, and the mark is realy a notch that lines up with a slot in the cover. The fipg will go in the four corners at the cam caps and just needs a dab about an 1/8- 1/4 inch. If your talking about the rear cam plug the factory did not aply fipg around that plug but you can when you install the new one, no need for more then a skim coat here as its a tight fit. You must though make sure you aply fipg to the sealing serface between the Cap and the head and make sure you only aply a skim coat hear only on the outside sealing serface(alot of ppl miss this and end up chasing a pesky oil leak.
