the ad is as follows:

1993 TOYOTA PICKUP EXT CAB 4X4, 239420kms (147,790 miles), Manual, 4x4, Cylinders 6, Alloy Wheels, Intermittent Wipers, Power Steering, Extended Cab, Local,No accidents, one owner,bc vehicle,Only 239k/kms!,Looks and runs excellent, two tone color, new tires and brakes,Super clean in & out, hard to find in this condition.Super nice truck!

asking $9,900 CAD (on par with USD at todays exchange rate)

I havent seen the truck in person and i'm sure i can do better on the price, but if the truck is in good as shape as it appears in the photos, and the engine checks out to be ok....what do you think?

Wow, is that thing ever clean! Just a little story...a guy I work with bought a '91 a few years back, and paid $8000 for it with ~160,000 kms on it. He totaled it a couple of years later and ICBC (BC's auto insurance provider) paid him $13,000 for it.
So yes, they hold their value, but I would say if you could get it for 8G's (or less) it would be a better deal.

its a good deal depends what you are going to do with it, i personally would buy one for $1000 in garbage condition
$2000- blasted, body work, re enforced chassy, painted and baked
$2500- new bushing set, LSD and lockers, shocks, leafs, air-ride, slotted brake set, rebuild gas tank
$1500- wheels
$1000- seats, thinner seats, sound system
$2000- rebuild engine
$1000- clutch, exhaust, intake ect ect
$11G’s total – that’s with you doing most of the work and you know it wont give trouble for a loooooong time

Used car dealerships ALWAYS charge more than a private seller for an obvious reason, that 15-16 year old truck IS NOT WORTH $10K (or there abouts),it's worth about $5K (being generous), and even if it's in the condition they say it's in it may still need expensive parts like oxygen sensor (in Canada about $300 for OEM Denso or $140 for NGK) plus other parts.

You can get diesel import Toyota 4-Runner & pickups that came from Japan with tons of features not found here for $10K (I provided the links below),buyers never pay near that price that's why you see the same for sale ads in Kijiji, Bargain Hunter, Buy & Sell, etc for many months. I say stay away from V6's and if you still insist read the info on this link which is a recent reply of mine to another person looking to buy a V6 too:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?threadid=35105

If you still want to purchase it take $5K in cash, that's right.Examine it in detail and in the end tell the sales person how old it is,that it still needs oxygen sensor, couple of other parts and that you can get Japan direct import models with tons of features for same price. Also red book value (Kelly Blue Book in USA) IS ALOT LESS. Pull out the $5K in cash and say I will take it right now,he will obviously say no then tell him if he doesn't get a better offer or changes his mind in the next MONTH to contact you, leave him your business card with the offer written on the back and walk away after shaking his hand.

He will call you back in a month and probably offer it to you for $6600 and tell him "NO I SAID $5K and privately they go for that" eventually he might let it go for that. Trust me it took two full months to sell my 1985 4-Runner locally (for only $900,it needed frame & body work, windshield, tires & door pins) and I had detailed for sale ads everywhere. And I noticed many other sellers took months (they had to lower their prices) to sell their rigs and none of them were asking $10K or near, noone in the right mind is gonna pay that much. Also because the Canadian Dollar is doing so well against the Japanes Yen and US Dollar importing Japan or USA trucks is much cheaper than before.

For Japanese import versions of the Toyota Hilux Surf (4-Runner), Hilux (pickup) and others being sold in Canada:

1 it's too clean. no really, the engine compartment is too clean.
2 it's a used lot. never ever ever trust a used lot.
3 the paint and bumper are not stock. possibly a totalled truck rebuilt. you won't know unless you get the frame checked out, and they've likely already painted the underside black ;)

toooooo much for it. it's just a truck. :)

I know that toyotas 89-95...especially the trucks....are high priced up here....

Wherei n Canada are you? Im in Calgary...

But still 9,900 sounds too high....

considering i got my 91 ext cab v6 SR5..with lift, 35's etc. etc. etc. (see sig for complete list of stuff)

for $6,500 CAD..few minor things wrong..but basically rust free....

and thats with only 139,000 kms on the clock.....

Hmm...i notice it doesnt have the bucket seats.....is it an SR5?.. does it have the 31" tire option,,important for gearing if you ever plan on getting bigger tires:)

Cheers

Thanks for all your opinions and advice.

Im going to check this dealer out tomorrow as it will be a sunny day. This dealer has over 10 used Toyota 4x4's to chose from...

Sidney provided some excellent advice to make me think twice about a 6cyl

should i consider a 4cyl or 6cyl, auto or manual tranny? (which are more reliable)?

Cheers.

Ok,

no offence to Sydney here...but i always dislike tha fact that newcomers to toyota trucks in general are told to stay away from the 3.0 V6..

In all essence, its like any engine...if ptper maintenenace is followed...these engine can last a long time...just as long or longer than the 22re (4cyl)

Yes, they have a bad rap from the head gasket issue...but the later ones ( i believe 92 and up..) have redesigned headgaskets....so as long as you check to see that the headgaskets have been replaced (quiock call to toyota, as sidney said, will tell you that) you should be fine....

My 3.0 has lots of guts (and i run 35's..id love to drive a stock one sometime...) and its not bad on gas

its never broken down and i keep up with the maintenance....i love it....

I think what it comes down to and that we should all remember...is that on boards like this....we are seeing but a fraction of the people that own and drive these trucks everyday....think about it....If your truck has problems, then people do research, find a place like this...and ask...so you'll see a very high concentration of problems....but there are millions of people that never see sites like this that drive their trucks everyday and have no problems

also, the 22re (4 cyl) has a headgasket issue as well...as well as timing chain covers etc etc etc. No engine is immune to problems..its all how its taken care of:)

anyway, theres lots to be said for this engine....you can check places like the following:

www.yotatech.com
do a search there for "3.0" or v6..youll see theres a lot of people that love the engine....

oh, and definetly go with the 5 speed...the 3.0 mated to the auto is apparently a little on the underpowered side

Anyway..thats my 2 cents
Cheers

This dealer won't have reasonable prices though.
the prices this dealer offers are actually the going rate (roughly) for trucks in this region.

Im from Vancouver, BC, Canada...and the trucks tend to sell higher than you guys down in the states.

You guys get brand new vehicles cheaper, mostly due to your bigger market, and once stronger dollar.

Im sure I can haggle this dealer down in price...but generally, these are roughly the market rate for my region. I guess I could buy from the US or elsewhere and have it shipped here...but then I lose the ability to examine it in person.

I'm from BC too, and you guys really wouldn't believe what these trucks sell for here!
It's not uncommon to see a truck this clean here, and not because it's a piece of crap. Some old guy probably had it in the garage its whole life. I have personally seen a '94 sell for $14000 - no kidding.

Edit: Look up "craigslist Vancouver" and do a search for Toyota trucks. You'll be amazed at the prices.
