Hello all,

I am new to the Toyota world (and automobiles as a whole) so I would like to ask a few questions.

First of, how can I determine the generation of my Toyota Corolla? In the docs, the date is "Dec 2004" but I guess from that I cannot be sure which gen my Corolla is.

The other thing is that I've seen videos around the internet that you can install just a CC stick on the car and it will just work like that. Still, as far as I see on my dashboard, there seems to be no indicator for CC, so I am not confident that I have the underlying electronics/support for CC at all. Is there a way to find this out before doing any unnecessary mods?

Relating to the above, I was wandering if I could drive the car with the airbag removed for testing purposes. I am worried if this would trigger any errors in ECU of the Corolla.

On a totally different topic, I've heard about the interface called "CAN bus" and was wandering how I could interface that through a micro computer like the Raspberry Pi to collect statistics during trips. Is the OBDII port the same thing? Where can I plug my pc to it? During the time that I had the stock radio on the corolla, it could display the average consumption, so I guess the interfaces for the radio somehow have access to that bus. If that is the case, do you have any hints on what the pinouts of the ports are? (I haven't done much research on the CAN bus yet, so feel free to let me know if I'm asking the obvious)

Thanks in advance!

Hi M70,

To answer your question "why", since I don't have an indicator on the dashboard, I was wondering if it's any good to just wire a CC stick I have lying around and see if it has any effect.

But it seems like a pretty bad idea anyway so I am now trying to figure out if I have the support for CC at all before doing anything.

Since you are in Bulgaria, your Corolla may be different. If it has a drive by wire (DBW) electronic throttle control, you may be able to just install the correct switches. If it's cable throttle, you would need the entire cruise control system (ECU, throttle controller, switches, cables throttle bracket, etc.) and is usually practically impossible.

As far as OBD, you need to know what protocol they use for your model year. From there you can use several devices to log data using the OBD data link connector.
